What has happened to the emoticons?

Instead of the grinning face, I have the word showing on other peoples posts with a little box around it.

What has happened to the emoticons?

That does sound very strange - usual question: how are you accessing MN?
tablet/desktop/mob (OP I don't recognise that browser screen but my eyes are a bit tired today)
