Should the Sun, the Star and the Daily/Sunday Sport be on the top shelf?

Hello

Some of you will remember filling out this super-snappy survey last week asking whether some papers that contain sexualised images of women should be kept on the top shelf in shops.

We've crunched the data now, and with over 1800 responses, the results are:

78% want the Sun to be displayed on the top shelf;
82% want the Star to be displayed on the top shelf;
86% want the Daily/Sunday Sport to be displayed on the top shelf.

We did this survey for No More Page 3 and they're going to to be making some noise about the results today.

As ever, let us know what you think.

Thanks
MNHQ

Funnily enough I walked out of a shop on Saturday because the owner didn't understand why I have a problem with the sport being beside kids magazines. He was of the opinion its only a newspaper.

I did point out to him that the fact women have breasts and a vagina are no longer news, most people have figured it out now. Apparently the word vagina was offensive!!

I would definitely support moving them.

Boomtownsurprise · 21/10/2014 10:18

Dunno seems a bit watered down really. I'd rather just see the pics of women removed entirely from the paper. Guess as a first step it would do. Unsure how it sits with the idea of 'no more' though. As actually isn't it saying 'nothing's changed'?

Absolutely - breasts are not news. Woman are not ornaments.
For me though, it's as much about the overall content of these papers with their xenophobia, homophobia, ageism and puerile reporting as the fact that they objectify women.
I think they should be printed on toilet paper thus fulfilling a dual purpose.

StephanieDA · 21/10/2014 10:40

It's a massive result which shows that people don't buy the Sun's description of itself as a 'family' newspaper. If the Sun is lumped with The Star and The Sport and shops begin to listen to customers and top-shelf them, that might just be the push to the Sun to get rid of Page 3. Apparently it's already a huge headache for them ;)

ElephantsNeverForgive · 21/10/2014 10:42

Sport certainly, as it's front page is often absolutely porn. The others aren't always any worse than many celeb mags.

The ban I want is no misery magazines by the tills. By six DD2 could (and probably did) read their 'I had sex with my brother ' etc. headlines.

elfycat · 21/10/2014 12:08

On Sunday I took DDs to a local playzone. The man on the next table had 'The Sun' open at page 3.

Not the time or place I felt. I made my feelings known and he turned the page quickly.

I felt like asking if he'd mind HIS daughter (now approx 4yo) posing for it later on.

TeWiSavesTheDay · 21/10/2014 13:49

I missed the survey but yes please! Very awkward trying to avoid the blatant porn near the other papers and magazines. Hide them!

Kewcumber · 21/10/2014 14:26

My DS (aged 8) is totally creeped out by pictures of women with no clothes on in newspapers. What's even more difficult is me trying to think up any credible reason why they should be there.

mouselittle · 21/10/2014 19:19

I don't think the pictures should be in a newspaper at all.
especially the sun which is kind of supposed to be a 'family' paper.
everyone knows the sport is for dirty old men though.

They would be best on a bonfire really, but failing that, top shelf.

BlueberryWafer · 21/10/2014 21:02

CuttedUpPear Grin agreed!

TheBogQueen · 21/10/2014 22:22

The Sport - yes it should go top shelf or calm down the front page.

The others...meh. They are not to your taste but many, many other people enjoy the tabloids.

TheBogQueen · 21/10/2014 22:29

I do think page 3 is a relic from the past but faced with any Rhianna video it seems rather quaint.

BlueberryWafer · 22/10/2014 07:29

I agree, BogQueen. Whilst page 3 is definitely an issue, I'm bore concerned about my children being exposed to some music videos that are shown in the middle of the day that, quite frankly, are disgusting.

Kewcumber · 22/10/2014 09:51

I've never seen a Rihanna video so can't really comment on that but my 8 year old has routinely stumbled across pictures of near naked women in "newspapers", in cafes, in chip shops etc.

TeWiSavesTheDay · 22/10/2014 11:10

It's enough to avoid music videos though. Newspapers are everywhere.

HexBramble · 22/10/2014 17:24

Newspapers are the tip of the iceberg certainly, but a good place to start. Get them off the lower shelves - yes please although I agree with the notion of printing them on bog roll and while we are at it, those god-awful magazines by tills.

TheGonnagle · 22/10/2014 19:41

Two weeks ago I complained to the manager at my local Morrisons because the Sun was on display across the entrance at toddler/small person height. The headline was a big banner about gay sex and murder (I had gay sex but I didn't murder my wife) and alongside was a lady looking vapid with her norks out explaining that she was a very private person but wanted to be the next Kelly Brook. Apparently The Sun pay for that product placement and I should take it up with The Sun. Bye bye Morrisons.
I am all in favour of top shelf for pseudo news porn.

BlueberryWafer · 23/10/2014 08:33

TheGonnagle I hope you would have been just as outraged if it had just said sex and not gay sex?

TheGonnagle · 23/10/2014 09:23

Um yes!??? Gay/straight/bi/transgender whatever. Actually it was the I KILLED MY WIFE bit that I took issue with.

TheGonnagle · 23/10/2014 09:23

Sorry, I reread my op and I really really didn't intend that to come out as my main issue.

BlueberryWafer · 23/10/2014 09:44

No that's fine I was just checking before someone jumped on it without you having a chance to clarify Grin their headlines are horrendous.
