Another feature I would love MN to add to their talk forums... the ability to quote a user when replying Grin

Good god No!

Mumsnet is perfectly fine as it as. Stop trying to fuck around with it.

If you can't c&p on your phone it's perfectly fine to just say 'i agree/disagree with x'

DawnMumsnet · 29/06/2014 22:30

Hi there,

Thanks for the suggestion, MTWTFSS

On the show of hands so far, it looks like this isn't something you'd all like to see on the threads.

Do keep the comments coming, though Smile

MargotLovedTom · 29/06/2014 22:59

But it is a pain having to scroll up to see what someone said as U2 said.
Plus c&p is more of a pain on a phone.

wafflyversatile · 30/06/2014 00:54

You don't have to have 15 replies nested in each other. You can have

[hec: hey how are you]
I'm fine. How are you?

then

[hugo: I'm fine. How are you?]
Also good. Except for my bunions, of course.

then

[Hec: Also good. Except for my bunions, of course.]
Ah, yes your bunions. I remember them well.

wafflyversatile · 30/06/2014 00:55

It's not as quick and easy which is why people don't always bother. quoting just require clicking a 'quote' button on the post.

TheFantasticFixit · 30/06/2014 01:14

Please, NO. There are plenty of sites out there that do all that bells and whistles shit, but please DawnMumsnet, don't let this go the same way. I'm with Chaos and Hec, i like the clean lines a d natural conversation style

bubblebabeuk · 30/06/2014 04:09

I would like to be able to tag people in posts, so they can tell I am replying to them as well as recieve a notification. Not massively bothered about quotes but being able to "like" a post would reduce the "here, here! I agree" type posts that can clutter up threads a bit.

nooka · 30/06/2014 04:47

Another problem with the quoting thing is that you can very easily have exclusive conversations going on which take up lots of space. Right now (as an example) Hec and Pedler talking about passports is a really very minor side bar, but I've been on sites where there are essentially just a number of individual conversations with long quote streams, as opposed to a mutual conversation between a number of participants.

To be honest I don't really see why people need to cut and paste enough for it to be an issue, in fact I thought it was considered pretty bad form.

"Another feature I would love MN to add to their talk forums... the ability to quote a user when replying"

Oo look. Quotation marks. Job done. Grin

FellReturneth · 30/06/2014 04:58

I know it's a pain having to type out a quote and bold it, but some forums I've seen where they do they quotes in the box the way you suggest have people quoting an entire six paragraph post just to comment on one sentence, and it get's incredibly tedious having to scroll through reams of repeated text all the time.

GarlicJunoWho · 30/06/2014 05:03

Even when you limit the quotes to the most recent one, it only helps a bit because loads of people ALWAYS use the quote button to reply. So then you get a thread with 1,500 word OP repeated in the first reply, their 800 word answer (if you're still scrolling) repeated in the third post, and onandonandon.

I like the flow of Mumsnet threads.

While I'm here - I don't like bold for quotes. This is a fairly new thing, it used to be italics and I think they're less shouty.

MNTechs could probably add a tagging feature for you, though, if you want notification when somebody's thinking about you! As long as I can opt out of the notifications Grin

Why don't you just PM a member when you think they'd be interested in something?

Nice work, @Thumbwitch Wink

LoveBeingInTheSun · 30/06/2014 05:46

It would kill mobile phone users having to scroll through all that

MikeLitoris · 30/06/2014 06:57

Ffs notifications? Is it really hard to just come back and check a thread for replies?
