WHY have you got rid of All On One Page?

Pascha · 10/12/2013 20:18

I HATE pages.

Please give them back!

ShamTech · 12/12/2013 15:31

SconeForAStroll in the vast majority when a thread is shared on the internet it is the 'all-in-one' link that is shared. So actually most random punters coming off the net end up on the all-in-one page.

ShamTech · 12/12/2013 15:42

BeyondTheLimitsOfXmasability clearly that was an exceptionally popular one that gave Tech a run for it's money, but it's by no means the only one. We have traffic spikes on a daily basis and we have to deal with them and make sure they cause the least amount of disruption to the site and its users.

ShamTech · 12/12/2013 15:54

BackOnlyBriefly there are other reasons which make it detrimental for us to redirect not logged in users to the standard layout. We don't take decisions like this lightly.

JustineMumsnet · 13/12/2013 12:12

@MmeCinqAnneauxDor

I use all on one page cause it is much better when a thread kicks off. You don't miss anything. [nosy emoticon]

I can cope with 500 posts on one page though.

Me too!

JustineMumsnet · 13/12/2013 12:32

I agree with all of it Tee. That all in one page is my preference (better when things kick off!) but that I can cope with 500 posts per page and one extra click.

(And actually thinking about it I'd prefer with one extra click if it means that thread will load quicker rather than like treacle which it often does, which it will, as Sham explained earlier)

JustineMumsnet · 13/12/2013 12:47

@DeckTheHallsWithBonesAndSkully

but they're not loading quicker Justine, thats just it.. if it was noticeable i'd be ok, but its not, its just as slow!

Not according to Google Page Insights, DeckTheHalls - our page speed on desktop and mobile is considerably quicker over last couple of days (though to be fair we've done a few things - not just the pagination thing).

Yes indeed MmeCinq.
Request noted. (Will see what I can do Xmas Grin)

JustineMumsnet · 13/12/2013 14:45

@MrPoppy

I'm struggling to see how it's quicker to load two pages than one.

It's quicker if one of the pages takes ages to load because it's so long. We see the aggregate numbers so we can tell how it effects the majority. Obviously individuals can have individual issues but it doesn't mean it's the same for everyone.
Looking at the situation for all the move to two pages makes logical sense. You won't find many sites that don't paginate and those that allow show all don't tend to have threads that reach 1000 posts. Because of our size, we do. The reason for the change in entirely to help with site loading speed - a slow site is one of the most annoying things about any website, Mumsnet included.

JustineMumsnet · 13/12/2013 14:49

@MrsCakesPremonition

The worst bit is not being able to use my browser search to find things on a thread that is split over pages.

I use it all the time. And now I can't without hopping backwards and forwards.

Yes MrsCakes that is a disadvantage of this move to improve site speed - you will sometimes have to make an extra click to search on those small proportion of MN threads that run into two pages. Sorry about that. All I'd say is that on a great deal of sites which paginate after 10-20 posts you'd be clicking a lot more than that.

JustineMumsnet · 13/12/2013 14:50

@bruffin

Well its now 14.38 and still cant get onto second page.

Sorry you're having problems bruffin but don't think it's a site problem - if it was we'd have heard from a lot more users about it.

JustineMumsnet · 13/12/2013 15:42

@SconeForAStroll

But I don't go in those other forums Justine. Just this one.

Oh and MN was awfully slow last night. Wouldn't load at all, and that was after all this stuff.

It seems that this is a fix that has made nothing better for the users, because the load time on your stats don't tally with the experience I am receiving.

Xmas Sad

But you are but one user Scone!

JustineMumsnet · 13/12/2013 15:45

@BeyondTheLimitsOfXmasability

Mine is timing out, but its hardly a new issue so didnt start a thread about it.

If the 500/page thing is un-negotiable, what about maryz suggestion of making all threads 500/posts max?

I think that would be a very fundamental change that could have quite profound consequences tbh. I'm not against it per se, but I do think it's a big step. Have observed over the years that a 1000-thread post has a natural cycle to it and usually (not always) even a contentious issue reaches a natural end after 1000 posts. Or maybe people have simply had enough after a 1000 posts. Often it means threads which have become rather entrenched or unpleasant come to a natural halt and folks can move on. I'm not sure this could happen in 500 posts - it might but it might not be enough and I wonder if as many people would be against it as for it...

JustineMumsnet · 13/12/2013 15:46

@SconeForAStroll

Well that's me told.

Did you mean to be so patronising?

No. I don't think I was patronising tbh.

JustineMumsnet · 13/12/2013 16:41

@Maryz

I can't access the threads I want on my phone at all atm. And my iPad isn't much better.

I have to load page 1, wait for ages, until the "next" button appears and then wait for ages more.

I don't believe it's just a few of us experiencing this. And Deck's Thread in Chat seems to back up the fact that there are an awful lot of us pissed off.

However, I presume from the posts on this thread (and your answer to Scone in particular) that you aren't going to believe that this is a problem for many users, and therefore aren't going to change it back.

So at least give us the choice of 500 post threads (on one page) vs 1,000 post threads (on two).

I'm sorry you're having problems Maryz - there are tonnes of reasons why that could be but as far as we can tell - and we can only go on what folks tell us but they are not usually shy in informing us if the site isn't working - this is not a general problem.

We agree 1000 posts on one page is ideal for some (myself included tbh) but I don't agree that it's preferable to a speedy site, so we think one extra click is a fair compromise.

As said, I think going to 500 post threads is a much more fundamental move that could actually change the way discussions pan out. We'd be more than happy to consider it but think we'd need to consult and let everyone have a say and it might be better to leave it a little while just to see how things settle down. We'll start a thread on it after Christmas if that's ok?

JustineMumsnet · 16/12/2013 09:39

@BoreOfWhabylon

And if you have finally got to page 2 and then refresh it takes you back to page 1 again!

Hate hate hate it.

We're looking at the refresh thing - hopefully we'll be able to fix that soon

(ooh double quote) We've had a look into this BoW, and we can't seem to replicate it. Can we ask which browser you're using?

Is anyone else having problems with it taking you back to page one?

RowanMumsnet · 16/12/2013 17:11

Hello

It's starting to look as though there's a correlation between page freezing/very slow loading and iPads. Is anyone having problems who isn't on an iPad?

RowanMumsnet · 16/12/2013 17:35

I can't drink any more after last week

More questions from the Shed of Tech:

  • Has anyone noticed whether this happens particularly when using either wifi or 3G?
  • Can you copy/paste the URL that's making your device freeze and paste it up here or send it to us at [email protected] (with the subject line 'page freezing')?
  • Can you let us know whether you're on the desktop or mobile site?

Thanks

ShamTech · 17/12/2013 17:29

If you're having trouble on your ipad, could you please go to Settings, then your Wifi and tap on the far right of the wifi network you're connected to (it's a little arrow symbol or the 'i' symbol). Then you'll be on a page that looks like below. Please send us a screenshot of that to [email protected]. Thank you.
