WHY have you got rid of All On One Page?

Pascha · 10/12/2013 20:18

I HATE pages.

Please give them back!

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 10:50

@RustyBear

"If you have customised to 'show oldest post first' (ie NOT reading the thread backwards) it should take you to the first post of any thread"

But it doesn't....

OK

That sounds odd

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 10:53

@exexpat

Can I repeat Mckayz' arghhhh.

I just checked my settings, I am definitely not meant to be seeing threads from most recent post, but if I click on a thread I haven't read, even one with 100+ messages, I go straight to the last one, rather than the OP.

Meanwhile, if I click on a long thread I am on, it goes straight to the OP, and I have to scroll through hundreds of messages to get to the last one I read.

aaarrgh

Still, it means I won't be spending any time on MN until it gets sorted out, which is probably a good thing because of my huge to-do list.

Thanks - that's very clear

So basically we've got it backwards

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 10:58

@OhYouMerryLittleKitten

While we are fixing things why do I have about 30 sticky threads on the android mn app when im using active threads? I love the app but it means that when the connection is slow I never actually make it to threads that are actually active. The issue seems to be that the stickies never expire and go back to August.

Sorry - it's an issue with your data on the app: you have to dump a load of data to force it to forget those threads. Will try to find a link for you. But the bad news is they'll start to build up again.

As we said below, we do have a long/medium term plan for the apps but anyone finding them really annoying at the mo might be better off using the mobile site for now.

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 11:00

@OhYouMerryLittleKitten

Of course if we don't like two pages at the 500 post mark tech could always limit threads to 500 posts rather than 1000 Xmas Grin
Grin

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 11:01

@Valpollicella

Rowan (you poor confused thing, I don't envy you right now Grin)

When logged in, I was all one page, oldest post first, reading down like a book etc.

Now, it takes me to the bottom of a thread, newest post first, and have to scroll back up to read, and if the thread is more than 500 posts, i get taken to page two, again the last post first

HTH

It sort of helps

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 11:02

@DameDeepRedBetty

Mine's being weird too, new threads I've never been on in Active are going p-toing straight to most recent post, and TIO are p-toing straight to OP, not my bookmark or most recent post.

On desktop, using New, Google Chrome.

It IS all working very quickly today though, and hasn't crashed at all.

Some Gin for ShamTech and Rowan to keep them going...

Thanks Dame

TIO links will be fixed v shortly, promise

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 11:07

@MirandaWest

I don't see how changing it so people can't have what they'd like (all posts on one page) is an improvement. People could select to have pages if they want to but now I can't select to not have pages. My phone can cope fine with a full thread.

We do see why people are getting annoyed

But this was an attempt to improve loading times for everyone

Our site data tells us that site loading times - across the board, not just for people loading big threads - weren't looking great.

And we have had many, many Site Stuff threads complaining about it.

We were really trying to improve user experience - honest.

Fully appreciate that we don't really seem to have achieved that but we're doing our best to fix it.

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 11:10

@DameDeepRedBetty

Right, just been in Active. I've been lurking on DoryZurich's thread, so it should have been highlighted. But wasn't. And I'd bookmarked it last night when I last checked in. So I clicked on it, got straight to the last post, and am wasting AGES trying to find my way back.

OK can we have a straw poll of those who were already using bookmarks about whether they're working or not?

And usual browser/platform/operating system info please

I'd got the impression that most people's bookmarks had survived

A few of you saying that links in Active not showing as already clicked etc - I wonder whether this is because the re-pagination means they're not being 'recognised' by your cookies as having already been opened

ie if you open them NOW, then click away, then go back to the Active list - are they showing as having already been clicked on?

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 11:14

@evilgiraffe

I'm on iPad, version 5.1.1, looking at the desktop site on safari.

Here's what happens with Threads I'm On:
If I click on the thread title, it takes me to the start of the thread (oldest post first as per my settings).
If I click on the most recent username of a 500 post thread, it takes me to the start of the thread, so I have to wait for the page to load, then clck on "last page", then wait for that to load, then scroll to the bottom.

Thanks evilgiraffe - we hope to have all TIO links sorted ASAP

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 11:16

@RustyBear

Ok, further confusion - I bookmarked Rowan's 10.38 post to see if that made any difference. Now, if I come to this thread via active convos I get taken to the bottom of the page (ie the most recent post) but if I go to the site stuff page and try it from there it takes me to the bookmark. (Ipad, iOS7.0.4 Safari).

Just going to try on chrome....

weird Confused

Do let us know what you find out, Rusty Thanks

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 11:16

@TheCurseOfTinsel

My threads clicked/not clicked colour change is variable atm (not helpful!).

So, for eg, this thread - I click on active convos, and it is highlighted. I click somethign else, click back to Active, and it's not highlighted.

It seems completely random.

Right - thanks. Will pass this on!

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 11:22

@DameDeepRedBetty

Update. From Active, I saw that BadBadKitten's Christmas weather forecast thread, which I am on, and had bookmarked the last post I read, was not highlighted. When I clicked on it, I was thrown straight to the end, not to my bookmark. At least I had my own post highlighted to help me navigate.

Thanks Dame

What operating system are you on - Windows?

Is anyone else having trouble with bookmarks?

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 11:24

@ItsAllGoingToBeFine

When I clicked on the link to the merchandise thread rowan posted earlier (that I have never read/bookmarked) it took me to the first/oldest post. (correct as per my customise settings)

If I click on a thread title in Active (that I have never read/bookmarked) it takes me to the last/newest post. (incorrect per my customise settings)

Yes - this does seem to be the issue. We've asked Tech to have a look to see what can be done.

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 11:28

@FairPhyllis

I have the issue with Active Conversations too.

If I click on any thread in Active I am taken to the most recent post at the bottom of the page (despite no bookmarks, and having customisation set to 'messages read down like a book').

So it is doing in Active what I want it to do in TIO.

AAAARRRRGGGHH.

I am using Firefox with XP.

Sorry but isn't that what 'read down like a book' is supposed to do - ie oldest post at the top, newest post at the bottom?

But it's taking you to the bottom not to the top - is that the problem?

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 11:30

@spamm

Bookmarks not working for me on my iPad, IOS7, web view, not app or mobile site, and I have used them since day one, as I love them.

I have my settings to read from OP down the page, and use bookmarks to manage the thread, but it juts get taken to most recent post on every thread I open. Also, threads already opened are not consistently highlighted as 'already viewed'.

Thanks spamm - sounds like your thread-view issue is the same as FairPhyllis's, is that right?

Bookmarks - hmm. Thanks. We will take a look

Threads already opened - yes, not sure what's happening here but we will flag it up

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 11:37

@OhYouMerryLittleKitten

Yay, my app is better, thank you :)

Hey looks like I can go home!

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 11:37

@IShallWearMidnight

will go back and work out where I'd got to earlier, but my bookmarks aren't working any more on threads I've read but not posted on. TIO still keeps my bookmarks (tested it on the long Strictly thread), but this one I read about 120 posts in, bookmarked it, and now I've come back to it, I don't get to where i left off. Sorry if this has already been explained, but because of ^^ I don't know Wink.

Now to go back and see if I can remember where i'd got to...

No that is VERY clear IShall, thank you

Dame does this sound the same for your bookmark issue?

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 11:45

OK - thanks everyone

Please do keep posting (we know you will Wink)

We're just waiting on some info from Tech about how long it's likely to take to address some of the issues. And then we'll be back with an update

Does that sound OK?

Apologies all. It wasn't supposed to be like this Blush

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 12:46

Hello

Right: Tech says that the links from Active, Threads I'm On and Threads I'm Watching should be behaving normally now (except that threads will still be paginated)

Can you let us know if it's working better for you now?

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 12:59

@Huitre

OK, I found another to watch. It is not working. When I try to access a post on the second page directly, it takes me to the top of the first page.

Gah - thank you for checking

Anyone else finding TIW not working?

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 16:39

Hello

Glad the interim glitches have (mostly) been sorted (thanks Tech) - if anyone else is having the same problem as huitre could you let us know?

OK, so: thinking out of the box - would an option (as Maryz said some time ago) on Active to go straight to p2 help at all?

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 16:55

@MrsCakesPremonition

Nooo - don't make Active jump straight to page 2. Not only will you have people who haven't RTFT - they won't even have read the OP.

No, not jumping straight to p2 - but an option to go to p2 (clearly signalled as such) for people who've already read p1

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 18:08

ShamTech · 12/12/2013 13:45

Hi all. Just to clarify:

Pictures are served off a separate server so they don't affect the usage of the main servers at all.

Serving up 500 posts at a time instead of 1000 decreases the load on our servers and makes the whole site more responsive for everyone. We are in the process of adding new servers, but the flip side is that every day we add new bits of functionality to the site and everyday we have more and more users and traffic to the site so we have to account for all of that.

And to put it into perspective, only 0.5% of all threads on Talk contain more than 500 messages.

ShamTech · 12/12/2013 14:41

When a thread becomes really popular and is shared a lot and brings in higher than normal traffic, serving up that one thread to thousands of visitors can use up a significant amount of resources on the server. Constantly having to deliver the 1000 message version of the thread makes the server very busy and slows down the site for everyone. Just reducing that to 500 messages cuts that load by half, even if it's just one thread.

And we are already working on other things to improve the load times - this is not the only change.
