WHY have you got rid of All On One Page?

Pascha · 10/12/2013 20:18

I HATE pages.

Please give them back!

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 09:28

Hello

Sorry you're annoyed by this.

We've been noting how many of you have been very, very irritated bv slow loading times across Talk - and this is one of the best ways of improving the site's performance. (Not just on mobile, but on all platforms.)

So we're hoping that the irritation of having to go to a second page will be allayed by a noticeable improvement for everyone in page loading times.

MN was always pretty unusual (we think?) in allowing such large threads to be displayed on a single page, and it was beginning to have a nasty effect on site functionality.

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 09:40

@Huitre

So we're hoping that the irritation of having to go to a second page will be allayed by a noticeable improvement for everyone in page loading times.

Um, not for me. It totally breaks the functionality of the site for me because I can no longer go to the last read post if it's on a second page.

That doesn't sound right - so are you saying the Bookmark function is effectively not working? If so we'll definitely try to get that fixed

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 09:40

@ItsAllGoingToBeFine

*Its very unfair to take away the ability to view the whole thread from those of us who like it that way because people moan about slow loading and have the option to change that themselves by using page views.

Why force all of us to use it??*

I think Rowan meant that allowing all posts on one page was fundamentally slowing down the site for everyone - not just those who chose the all on one page option.

Yes, this is right (as I understand it). The server load created by serving up threads bigger than 500 posts was slowing down loading times for everyone. (I think - disclaimer: I am not a Tech. But that's my understanding)

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 09:44

@Huitre

The thing is, if they could make the 500 post pages actually functional, nobody would really mind that much - it's the loss of being able to go to the new posts immediately rather than click and click again and scroll etc that's annoying. Grin

OK - apols for stupidity on our part - could you explain exactly what's not working?

Are bookmarks not working?

Obviously (well, maybe not obviously) we didn't intend this change to mean that people would have to spend ages finding the most recent post

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 09:45

Aha, thanks for info

If you could keep outlining exactly which bits have stopped being functional we'll get Tech to have a look ASAP

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 09:54

@bruffin

it's the loss of being able to go to the new posts immediately rather than click and click again and scroll etc that's annoying

agree with Huitre. It takes a lot longer to wait for the 500 posts to load then press the next page, wait for those to load, then have to scroll to the bottom of the screen on my phone, than waiting for the 1000 to go straight to the bottom.

Yup sure

I guess we need some way of distinguishing between people who've opened a thread before (and thus probably want the most recent post) and people who've not opened a thread before (and thus probably want to start with the oldest posts)

TEEEEECCHHHHH!

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 09:55

@custardo

yes yes - I just had to 'go to next page' tis not on
Grin

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 09:58

Thanks huitre

OK - for everyone being frustrated by this - could you switch on and use bookmarks for now, if you haven't already? While we try to see what can be done about it.

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 10:16

@GodRestTEEMerryGenTEEmen

You can only use bookmarks if you aren't using MN Classic.

Which makes me suspicious as to HQ's real motives. To move everyone off Classic? Because we all know if you keep a tab open, don't refresh, and have it all in one page you can read a thread even after it's been deleted?

And that HQ works on the Jesuit principal of 'easier to ask forgiveness than permission'. And I'm not saying you need to ask our permission before making changes.

But to implement those changes at 530ish pm and then ignore complaints overnight?

If this pages thing stays, it will make me leave. I hate pages. Always. On all sites and never use them.

And plenty of sites let you view all in one page. Including ones with lots of pictures.

So...added pictures...took away pages.

Huh.

Blimey

Has absolutely never occurred to us to try to 'move everyone off Classic', whatever you can or cannot do with deleted threads

You're all absolutely right that we should have warned you about this - totally our fault. (And Tech did warn us about it so we don't even have that excuse.)

We are trying to warn you in advance about major changes (as we did about the pictures, and about the recent introduction of notification emails on Threads I'm Watching).

But we didn't for this

We should have

We're extremely sorry

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 10:23

Right then

The 'Threads I'm On' and 'Threads I'm Watching' links issue is being fixed and we'll release that soon.

Could y'all do us a favour and click on this thread and tell us what's the most recent post you see? Because I (Windows 7 PC, Chrome, desktop site) get taken straight to the most recent post, despite it being on two pages.

If this doesn't happen for you could you tell us your operating system, platform (desktop/mobile site) and browser (IE, Chrome, whatever) please?

Or am I being fick and have misunderstood the issue

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 10:26

@Huitre

Could y'all do us a favour and click on this thread and tell us what's the most recent post you see?

Top post. But it's a thread I have never bookmarked. See my last post.

OS Windows 8, Chrome, desktop site.

Thanks huitre

The TIO/TIW links will be fixed v soon (as in today), promise

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 10:28

@Mckayz

Rowan, that only works if you have posted on that thread surely? I haven't so get taken to the first post.

I don't think so Mckayz - I haven't posted on that thread but it's still taking me to most recent post (lightbulb: do you have threads set to display most recent post first?)

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 10:29

@SootikinAndSweep

Is this a ploy to get us to buy merchandise?

hahahahah Grin

ShamTech · 11/12/2013 10:30

Just to let you know we're fixing the links on I'm on and I'm watching etc - I'll post again when that's done. Apologies for inconvenience.

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 10:32

OK settings:

Right down the bottom of the page - just above the 'Shortcuts' menu - menu running across the page beginning with the word 'Talk' - hit 'Customise'

Scroll down to 'Other options'

You can change 'Reading direction', 'Messages per page' (up to 500, cough cough) and - if you're not on Classic - 'Display bookmark links'

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 10:34

OK so if we fix the TIO and TIW links (thanks ShamTech Flowers)

the major remaining issue is: wanting to see the most recent posts but not be permanently set to 'most recent post first' - yes?

Or are there other things?

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 10:36

@piratecat

whilst we're here can i ask again why on the android app, can it not out 'thread's i'm watching' in date order.

I've asked/grumbled a couple of threads, but haven't seen an answer.
Threads I'm on works fine on android though. Yet watching, well i get threads come up at the top from months ago.

I don't really bother with the app because if it.thanks

Sorry piratecat.

We have a plan for making all the apps massively better but it's a slow process. For now, you're really better off using the mobile site.

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 10:38

@custardo

I don't like this 500 posts thing , not one bit

That does rather seem to be the consensus

And if everyone absolutely continues to hate it then we will of course have another think

BUT

please remember that we did this to improve loading times not just for people on long threads but for absolutely everyone

So we're taking away but we're also givething

Albeit in a manner that has thoroughly annoyed absolutely everyone

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 10:40

@TheCurseOfTinsel

O'm having issues clicking on any thread longer than one page, from Active convos.

It takes me straight to the end of the thread, however many pages that is - not a lot of help if I am trying to read a thread from the beginning!

I'm on a Mac, OSX 10.6.8, Safari, Desktop site.

OK - so sounds like you might be better off adjusting your settings so that you're loading oldest post first, not most recent? (Assuming you've got it vice versa at the moment)

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 10:40

@Valpollicella

Sorry cut off there. Why wouldn't it take me to the first page, first post? Sometimes I don't log in to MN when at work (shhh) but skip through a couple of threads by clicking through the pages?

You too Val - have you got it set to take you to most recent post first?

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 10:42

@Mckayz

ARGHHHH!!!

Now if I click on a post in Active it takes me to the last post. I just want it to go back to bloody normal. Go to the first post of a thread I haven't posted on and go to the post I click on from Threads I'm On.

Not too much to ask for really.

It's something to do with the load on our servers. I'll ask Tech for a better explanation

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 10:43

Sorry my last response should have been to DeckTheHalls

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 10:48

@Mckayz

If you have customised to 'show oldest post first' (ie NOT reading the thread backwards) it should take you to the first post of any thread

TIO link will be fixed ASAP

So - on a thread you've already posted on - where do you want to be taken to? Your own most recent post?

How were you achieving this before - where did you used to be taken to when opening a thread you'd already posted on?

SORRY for annoying questions, am really trying to isolate exactly what we need to ask Tech to have a look at

Also SORRY if I've completely misunderstood

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 10:49

@Valpollicella

And Rowan, if I'm not logged in, my settings can't apply, even if I now reset them iyswim.

So if I just want to have a amooch around threads without logging in, I'll be taken to the end, and then have to click back to the first page and then through that way. (sorry Grin)

OK - so if you're NOT logged on it's taking you to most recent post? And you'd rather it took you to oldest post?

RowanMumsnet · 11/12/2013 10:50

@Valpollicella

Rowan, thanks but that was my default setting! They've been wiped without me changing them...? like when bloody FB changes it's settings without telling you Shock Grin

Sorry, which was your setting - oldest post or most recent post?

Could you have a look in your settings to see if it's been changed? I don't think it should have been

But then I am increasingly Confused
