Problems with public wifi preventing access to Mumsnet

Hi all,

We have recently had an email regarding a public library blocking access to Mumsnet as it contains 'pornography content'.

We do know we are a site for adults and can be rather sweary and we know that some filters can be rather sensitive to this.

We have heard of other issues involving Mumsnet being blocked from sports centres and college sites.

So, we were wondering if anyone else had this problem?

Have you ever had difficulty accessing Mumsnet from a public place via their wifi and if so, were you given a reason?

Thank you in advance blames bumsex friday Wink

And what about on mobile phones? Or children sharing images with friends on mobiles? Porn in other formats is restricted so it should be online.

Tee2072 · 04/10/2013 08:07

Porn access is already 'opt in' on most, if not all, mobile internet networks.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 04/10/2013 09:53

My work Internet blocked the site during the last election Hmm It's fine now though, I could access it again post election!

That's not wifi though.

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 04/10/2013 10:11

I've not had any problems getting onto MN on public wifi or even on our work wifi.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 04/10/2013 10:48

When I first started accessing the internet via my phone I had to ring my mobile network to turn off the 18+ filter. I didn't have problems with MN, but certain blogging sites which allowed posters to age restrict certain posts were completely inaccessible.

BurberryQ · 04/10/2013 11:42

Sarahwhizz · 04/10/2013 15:46

Can anyone recommend any additional filters/software you can use to restrict childrens access to web?

Thank you

Yiska · 04/10/2013 16:20

Hi Sarahwhizz

I don't know how old your children are but there's a lots of useful info from MN here;

I can use the internet at work on breaks/end of day. This isn't wifi but yes the filters do the same on some threads. Is usually a signal somebody's been called a cunt on that thread....... Grin

Our Mac Donald's and the cloud work fine here.

Otherwise I have unlimited 3G so don't worry.

MrsCakesPremonition · 05/10/2013 03:49

I wonder if Netmums, with all their **s, have the same problems?

KatyPutTheCuttleOn · 05/10/2013 07:30

I'm surprised at people who use Mumsnet in school....

crochetcircle · 05/10/2013 11:17

I have never managed to use mumsnet on the tube wifi. I use the app rather than the website. Interesting that others have managed to use it underground. I wonder what I'm doing wrong?

BurberryQ · 05/10/2013 11:57

am on 'The Cloud' right now - never had a problem with it.

BurberryQ · 05/10/2013 11:59

I too was wondering whether netmums has the same problem but guessed not as there is no swearing Grin bollocks to that!

SillyBeardyDaddyman · 05/10/2013 13:21

I got blocked by Orange's 3g network from coming on here. I had to phone customer services and get them to unlock their "adult" filter.

I blame those sweary fuckers.

BerylStreep · 05/10/2013 17:44

I had problems today at Gatwick - it came up with some strange message along with a code. I switched to 3G and it still did the same thing though.

I working fine now that I am home.

candycrushhater · 06/10/2013 19:43

Yes. I've had problems accessing mumsnet at my local Tesco using their free wifi. Can't remember the message though - content blocked or something like that (I think).

FrankelInFoal · 06/10/2013 19:59

I was stopped from accessing a particular thread by the free Wifi in a Tesco store, but it did have a swear word in the title.

RustyBear · 06/10/2013 22:31

Katy - I'm support staff and unlike most of the teachers I do actually get breaks and lunchtime when I can MN.

Anyway, it's the school's fault I'm on here at all - I found Mumsnet when the Headteacher asked me to find out what other schools did about parking problems and the first Google result was a particularly long and fascinating thread about double parking outside a school - I was hooked instantly!
