Would it be cheaper, easier etc if you kind of, erm, deleted all the posts over say 10 years old?

I seem to remember proffering this suggestion before once in some other discourse...and being shot down but would it, seriously, be a thing worth considering?

It would stop those of us what fret about our entire posting histoire being available to the US&A everyone, forever, from fretting quite so much - and also it would free up a ginormous server or two.

Just wondering really. I mean I like to do it with my own paperwork, from time to time. Does it make sense?

(does a server actually look like a skip, sort of thing? I have no idea) Blush

it sounds big

Why the USA particularly? Are you an internationally wanted criminal or spy?

If you don't want something to be available, don't post it.

Rooners · 09/08/2013 16:16

Yes in fact I am, but I can't possibly say that on here without using this neat little neuralizer...

Oh and a server more or less looks like any other computer, only in a rack with other servers and very little attached to it. Maybe a keyboard and a monitor for doing stuff. Or maybe they drag one from another computer when they want to do stuff not that I've ever done that by 'stealing' my boss' monitor and keyboard and forgotten to put them back when he was on holiday.

Rooners · 09/08/2013 16:17

But seriously it isn't just about that. And I was joking about America.

Aha, Tee, if you can stall him from reading MN for 10 years, he will never know you even posted that.

Tbh, I think all the threads over 10 years old are just Justine and Carrie talking to themselves Grin

Tee2072 · 09/08/2013 16:19

Well, he's not my boss any more, this was long ago and far away and the wench is dead...

Rooners · 09/08/2013 16:23

LOL Helen Grin

maybe 5 years would work?

Though a rolling 10 years could start now-ish could it not?

I don't know. I'm the resident luddite so tell me to shut up if I'm talking rubbish - I honestly have no idea how much it costs to store all the shite we talk on a daily basis but I'm sure someone off the Good Housekeeping board would agree with me.

If you haven't used it in over a year, THROW it AWAY! Smile [duster]

I've no idea either re cost. But is that the reason you're asking?Very nice of you and all...

Rooners · 09/08/2013 17:09

Well, yes it was partly. I notice that when people moan about adverts and so on, Olivia or Justine comes along and says our enormous server needs a team of trained pygmies to keep the cogs turning, and all this, and I thought, well, surely we can afford to chuck about 7 zillion threads about potty training...there is a new one every day, if people want to search.

I don't know. There may well be a groundswell against it if you put it to the teeming masses. But I'd be happy about it Smile

Not sure the potty-training threads are straining our server quite as much as, say, our 100-odd Local sites, though.

And then there's the gin bill, of course...

Rooners · 09/08/2013 17:28

Oh goodness I didn't mean to imply that at all Blush

I keep well out of local. I might see someone who knows me Hmm

The gin budget obvs needs ringfencing though...well till next week when I'm sure it'll be slashed, for some reason Grin

Noooo I like reading the archives! Some of the funniest threads are from years ago. Them oldies need protecting and laying down like posh wine.

CoTananat · 09/08/2013 18:48

The servers need to serve pages to all the millions of visitors, but the actual giggage of the site won't be very costly to store. It's almost entirely text, and that doesn't take up very much space.

It's hits that cost, not content. But they also drive up the ad revenue so it works out.
