The new Navigation Bar (at t'top): the "official" thread

70 replies

HelenMumsnet · 05/06/2013 10:21

Hello. There are ruddy millions quite a few threads in Site Stuff at the mo about changes/glitches/weirdy stuff related to the release of our new Navigation Bar (the big blue bar at the top of the page that helps you find all the various bits of Mumsnet).

So, for clarity's (and sanity's) sake, we're starting this thread to keep everything in one place - and have just one thread where you tell us what's not working for you and where we update you on what we've fixed/are fixing etc etc.

Right then...

A couple of quick answers/updates for you right now:

 • The PM Inbox flag/blog/"you've got a PM" icon is now back. Apols for having inadvertently made it disappear.

 • The jumpiness/flickiness of the Nav Bar in general: we're working on sorting this now - and hope to have a fix released by tomorrow.

 • MyMumsnet: this will reappear on the Nav Bar at some point in the next three days or so. In the meantime, you can find MyMumsnet here.

 • Keep me logged in. We're looking into this - and will update you soon.

Any more Qs/probs/moans/peans of praise (hopeful), do please post them here.

@mistlethrush

The issue of the 'T' on the 'mumsnet talk' which comes up with a hidden 'offers' drop down is one that I've been mithering about since yesterday. I agree, on chrome it is still there - the Ts are slightly affected by it being there, but the worst thing about it is that it is too low down so is activated when you move between 'Talk' and 'Threads I'm on'. Its still there. And if you did want the 'offers' drop down there is nothing to show that you should hover there to access them...

I do like the less-flickiness of the dropdowns though - quite a relief that. Thank you!

Mistlethrush, does the problem resolve if you zoom out?

HelenMumsnet · 06/06/2013 16:31

@Indith

Oh yeah I hadn't noticed the offers dropdown over the T before. I use Chrome too.

No it doesn't resolve itself if I zoom out. I just zoomed to titchy tiny writing and all that happened was that it went over the top of the "Mumsnet" instead of over the "Talk".

Ok. We've managed to replicate this on one of our screens now, so we do see what you're talking about. We'll try to work out what's causing it - and get cracking on a fix.

HelenMumsnet · 06/06/2013 17:49

@HelenMumsnet
I genuinely feel the ticked "keep me logged in" button is the most serious issue. I feel this has probably security implications for vulnerable posters and should be an urgent matter.

In fact I'm considering starting an AIBU about it, to get the opinions of all those who don't use site stuff.

I hope you had a good holiday, btw Smile

We hear you, Maryz, we promise. We're just trying to get to the bottom of various related stuff first. We'll update you as soon as we can.
Update re "keep me logged in".

We're going to fix it so that if you uncheck the "keep me logged in" tickbox, we will "remember" you've done that and, next time you log in, it will automatically know not to keep you logged in.

HelenMumsnet · 06/06/2013 22:40

@Maryz

Oh, that's great. I'm on Chrome on some sort of computer atm.

I can pass my mouse over without the box opening. I only need to hover for a split second to see the dratted gurning child, but I can run the mouse up and down the screen safely.

Do I detect just a smidgeon of contentment, Maryz?

HelenMumsnet · 06/06/2013 22:44

Hurrah. Wine

HelenMumsnet · 07/06/2013 10:15

@ScrambledSmegs

Ooh, there's a thread about this? Excellent.

The nav bar is a lot less irritating now, although still a little bit trigger happy on a tablet. Probably down to my fat fingers though.

The pics are rather off-putting. Even if you were to put a pic of the cutest baby in the entire world on my profile I think they would be off-putting.

Hope you had a lovely holiday, Helen. Did you go somewhere nice?

Oh good. Glad it's less irritating now.

And thank you, yes I did. Went to Turkey

HelenMumsnet · 07/06/2013 10:15

@Fuckwittery

Would I be alone if I said I like the new navigation bar, have had no trouble with it (on chrome on PC or safari on ipad). Mn was starting to look a bit dated imo.

However there was definitely an option to click into threads I'm on from the home page previously, because you could hover on talk.

not read all the thread so apologies if that's been clarified.

Thanks, Fuckwittery. You're not the first to point that out. We're looking into that.

HelenMumsnet · 07/06/2013 10:21

@Sparklingbrook

Remind me where My Mumsnet is again.....

My Mumsnet is here. There's a link to it in the OP too.

HelenMumsnet · 07/06/2013 12:44

@aufaniae

I'm with Indith, I'm missing the easy access to Threads I'm on.

Before, I used to go to mumsnet, several times a day hover over "talk" and then click "threads I'm on".

Now I have to actually click on talk, wait for the next page to load, and then click again on TIO.

I know it only takes a few mili-seconds longer, but the extra click does feel like an irritating barrier, and especially as I do it so many time a day, waiting for all those extra page loads most be taking - oooh - weeks out of my life if you add them all up together, considering the amount of time I spend here!

When you say, "I used to go to Mumsnet, several times a day hover over "talk" and then click "threads I'm on".", aufaniae, do you mean that you used to go to the home page?

HelenMumsnet · 07/06/2013 13:32

@aufaniae

But actually it doesn't have to be the home page, it was from the menu so presumably accessible from every page.

OK, well there's a TIO link on every single Talk page (under the big black Mumsnet Talk header, there are two lines of blue links - it's in the second line, two in from the left, next to Active).

And we're working on putting a TIO link on the Homepage too. Will update you when that's sorted.

HelenMumsnet · 07/06/2013 14:44

@mistlethrush

I've still got the 'offers' tab coming up from 'Talk' though - and that one does come up when you're not wanting it to due to its location... I've hit it several times today.

Yes. Sorry: we haven't released the fix for that one yet. We're hoping it's going to be today. Will update you on this thread when it's done.

HelenMumsnet · 07/06/2013 14:58

@mistlethrush

Sorry Helen - didn't want the success with the reduction in flick to go to Tech's head Grin

Well actually, we've just released the fix for IE9, IE8 and Chrome, so he's looking quite pleased with himself!

Let us know how it's looking now for you.

HelenMumsnet · 07/06/2013 15:41

@mistlethrush

'Offers' still steadfastly hiding over 'Talk' I'm sorry to say Helen... Still on chrome.

Gah! OK, we'll try again...

OliviaMMumsnet · 08/06/2013 19:02

Thanks for these.

HelenMumsnet · 10/06/2013 12:56

@fuckwittery

I found it tricky and less obvious to find the "my registration page" when I last namechanged looked, as I'm sure I used to get to that from the home page too

Hello. Hello. And don't worry: the My Mumsnet link got dropped by accident (see previous posts from us) and will be back shortly.

HelenMumsnet · 10/06/2013 12:57

@AnneEyhtMeyer

The offers bit is hiding by the Mumsnet Talk bit for me too now, and I'm on Firefox.

We're hoping all the hiding Offers thingies will be fixed today.

HelenMumsnet · 10/06/2013 12:58

@BehindLockNumberNine

Not when you first log into mn and arrive at the homepage. I don't have mine permanently open. Unless it has always been like that and I have not noticed, in which case ignore me Blush

There is a link to Active on the main homepage. If you look at the Mumsnet Talk (discussions of the day) box on the right: at the bottom of it, there are three links - and the middle one is to Active.

HelenMumsnet · 10/06/2013 13:00

@BehindLockNumberNine

I don't know if this has already been said, or if I am missing the point spectacularly (wouldn't be the first time) but with the old bar I could hover over the word TALK and the options for Active, I'm On, I'm Watching etc would appear. With this bar I cannot do that. I have to press TALK, wait for it to load and THEN select Active, I'm On etc

So for me this is NOT an improvement.

Sorry to have disappointed you, BehindLockNumberNine. There are links to Active elsewhere on the home page (see previous post) and we're working on putting a link in to I'm On, too.

HelenMumsnet · 10/06/2013 13:01

@Valpollicella

Just fyi MNHQ, I'm not sure if you've already tried to fix it....but the log in thing still stays checked, even though earlier I unchecked it.

I logged out and then just logged in again and it was still ticked

I'm not sure that fix has been released yet, actually. I'll check for you now.

RebeccaMumsnet · 10/06/2013 16:06

@ChaosTrulyReigns

HelenM, I'm just posting on here in the hope of a personal response as that seems to be your ChoreOfTheDay. Smile

THIS IS AN AUTO RESPONSE

HelenMumsnet is all out of personal responses for the day.
However, your post is important to us, please do try again later.

HelenMumsnet · 10/06/2013 17:21

Ok, so now we should have...

 • My Mumsnet back. Ta da!

 • A released fix for the Chrome/IE9 overlapping letters/Offers thingie

Hurrah!

Do tell me how much you love it

HelenMumsnet · 10/06/2013 17:32

@RedKites

I don't know if this relates to a fix being released? But just now I tried to deliberately trigger one of the menus at the top, and no matter how much I hover over or click on them, they won't appear. I'm using Firefox, and it was working in this browser on this laptop previously.

Oh dear. I've broken everything. Shock

Give me a mo to, um, find the sticky tape...

HelenMumsnet · 10/06/2013 17:33

OK. Better now?

OliviaMMumsnet · 10/06/2013 17:39

OliviaMMumsnet · 10/06/2013 19:02

@SoupDragon

Olivia, Shouldn't you play Chaos a 20 minute flute solo twice instead?

roar
Grin Grin Grin
That has tickled me.
