Why do you keep going offline Mumsnet?
Is annoying.
HelenMumsnet · 24/05/2013 18:31
Sorry. Sorry. It's very annoying, isn't it?
We are kicking things. And crossing our fingers.

Hi, The intermittent site offline message should be better now. Sorry about that. The dodge-o sized buttons should be fixed overnight.
Tech · 24/05/2013 20:40
Why thank you FruOla. That's very kind of you but I must regretfully decline. Though the weather here in New York is very London-ish today... makes a person wistful for the old place.

@Tech
Ack don't be wistful. It's cold and miserable. Noo Yawk is where it's at.

Hello MadBusLady, the biscuit 404 is still there. The site offline page is a 503 status message.
What happens (if you are interested) is that each request for a page is dealt with by a web server and an application server. When you request a page, the request goes to the web server which will delegate it to the app server if it's for something like a talk page, rather than a file like an image. If the app server fails to respond for whatever reason within a short timeout period, the web server sends back a status code of 503 to your browser, which means service unavailable, and also sends that site offline message so that the browser can display something.
Earlier this evening, an application server was overloaded because of a human error (possibly by me though I couldn't possibly confirm such a thing) and so wasn't responding to all requests quickly enough. So sometimes you got an "offline" and sometimes you got a page.
