I tried to start a new thread in my local site (glasgow) but theres no "start new thread" bit at the top- is there something different I have to do for my local one?

Hello. Yes, it's not very user-friendly, is it? Sorry: it's on the list of stuff to fix.

BUT what you need to do is look at the Topics links at the top and choose the most appropriate (so, Discussions or Childcare Wanted, or whatever), click on that and then you'll see a page with a Start a New Thread link.
