Hello.

Just thought it might be worth letting you all know that, when you want to alert us at MNHQ to a post (or a thread) and you hit the Report link, you now get two options: you can either 'Report as spam' or 'Report for other reasons'.

We've introduced this to make life a little easier for us and, more importantly, to try to make sure we can quickly see the Reports that might need dealing with more urgently than others.

Do please try to take the time to select the right option when you're reporting. It would really help.

And if you have any other questions about Reports and how the whole system works, do please post them here. Xmas Smile

@HauntedLittleLunatic

Could you clarify what you would class as spam?

Obviously someone posting all over the boards with the same message promoting a website or blog or whatever is spam.

What about an individual post which is blatently trying to recruit volunteers for something?

What about a post that we are reporting because we think it might be a journalist and want you to cast judgement.

Tia

OK, blatant recruitment would prob fall under 'Report as spam' banner - but if they're really posting all over the shop and therefore annoying the hell out of everyone, do 'Report for other reasons' so we can get to it quicker.

As for the possible journo scenario, prob best to 'Report for other reasons': if she is a journo, we'd likely want to drop her a nice line explaining how MN works before folks have a go at her

@HauntedLittleLunatic

So the spam option is the slow option?

Xmas Grin No, let's call it DefCon2, as opposed to DefCon1.

Before we had this new system, we couldn't distinguish easily between Spam reports and reports of, say, a mahoosive bunfight.

This new system allows us to see the difference and so prioritise a bit.

It's kinda like the red flag thing you can have on email.

@HauntedLittleLunatic

Hmm...ponders if I could test the system and measure the difference in speed between defcon1 and 2...and being a scientist I would have to repeat and take averages...hmm...

Well, you could, but you'd have to adjust for time of day, volume of simultaneous reports, gin-swilling quotient of MNHQer on duty, mandatory biscuit breaks...

@TheOneWithTheHair

So do suspected trolls go under defcon 1 then?

Absolutely. They're probably Defcon 0.5, tbh Grin

LittleTownofBethleHelenMumsnet · 17/12/2012 13:29

@Whistlingwaves

Can we not just have buttons that say [mahoosive bunfight] [suspected troll] [spam]

What if it's a mahoosive bunfight with a suspected troll over some spam, though?

@BOFingSanta

Can I be awkward and ask about the reasons you put up for thread deletion too, please? There was one a couple of nights ago where the message put up was that it was deleted for "descending into trollhunting", when it was a troll invasion from the Honda boards and they had linked back to their own site themselves to demonstrate the fact. After reporting, being good Halo, a few people rightly ticked them off for being crass enough to invent a sexual abuse scenario for lulz. That isn't troll-hunting! But the thread deleted message made MNers look like the norties.

[lipwobble][tentative footstamp][imminent sending to bedroom]

Not awkward at all, BOFingSanta. Sounds like we put up the wrong reason for deletion on that thread. I'll have a chat with the weekend crew and see what happened.

@KeemaNaanAndCurryOn

I've always wondered whether you have automatic incident logging set up. I'm assuming that since all reports have an incident number attached that you do have a management system, but I've always wondered how much is automated to save you time.

I've set up commercial systems so if someone emails from a registered email address, it automatically logs it into the system and sends them a "Thanks for your email we will look into it" response. If someone replies to an email where the incident number is in the subject line, it automatically attaches it to the record and sends a notification to whoever the incident is assigned to to let them know there's an update. If they're using the web front-end and select certain categories then it logs it into the system as different priorities - a bit like your Spam / Bun fight distinction.

I keep seeing that you're snowed under with emails and the like, so was curious as to how you manage them. I shall now crawl back to where I came from.

Yep. Our system is not dissimilar to your one, Keema - but we don't like to automate replies too much. Cos we like you all and like to reply personally and all

@Djembe

All good, but please add these to the iPhone app - I have reported spam several times from the app and received a 'cheers' email from MNHQ suggesting I 'report as spam' which I can't actually do as I always access MN via the app.

That's not long winded at all, and it's a good point. As our shiny new spam button a new feature, it wasn't included in the original brief for the app, which was written way back when. In all honestly, the report spam button probably won't be appear on the app for a while, as it'll be quite a while before we do a major redesign. Sorry about that.

We love all reports of delicious spam, so even if you're on the app, can you still report the normal way and just put "SPAM!" in the message?

One final thing, would you mind forwarding the mail form us suggesting that you report it as spam to us at [email protected]? It doesn't something we'd say, perhaps there had been to much gin that day.

Now that ^ is a longwind post!
