Sock puppeting.

Can I ask how MNHQ are going to deal with this, given that technology now means that it is perfectly possible to post simultaneously, from 2 different devices, showing 2 different IP addresses?

Is it going to be ignored? Or do you have plans afoot to deal with this?

"She name-changed to do it, it wasn't a "coincidental" name change."

'Ere, you've just had a go at MNHQ who "can't (with respect) actually know" things definitely - and you're busy churning out the same.

Ditto all the people making weirdo accusations that "poster A is poster B cos we all said so" on that thread - provably wrongly in one case.

Even strong suspicions are not the same as knowing something: just as well, or we'd all be dead of the awful diseases we suspect we have before going to the doctor.

MNHQ, on the other hand, may actually know stuff - like one name's posting from Scotland and the other from Cornwall. And otherwise make quite careful statements like "We have no reason to think..." which leaves us all to make up our own minds.

OneMoreChap · 01/11/2012 11:30

On occasions I get quite vexed with nitwits accusing me of posting as 2 or more people. I have felt like going "Waah! MNHQ, tell 'em, go on, tell 'em" but rather more maturely decided I couldn't give a stuff...

There's all sorts of ways of identifying troll/sp as per wikipedia... but MNHQ will hold their cards close to their chest on this.

Tee2072 · 01/11/2012 11:30

Or a sock puppet....

cornybeefhash · 01/11/2012 11:31

if MNHQ aren't going to go on a thread to post that in their opinion someone isn't a troll (which is rare anyway) then what happens to a poster once it's suggested that they are a troll? How can that poster prove otherwise?

From what I've observed once someone is accused of being a 'troll' there's no way back for that poster.

MNHQ should be able to control that.

OneMoreChap · 01/11/2012 11:32

report the troll spotting post...

Tee2072 · 01/11/2012 11:39

So I would say the answer to Stratters' question is: Yes. MNHQ have ways to ID socks and trolls even with constantly changing IP addresses.

Trills · 01/11/2012 11:47

Whenever we have a "how to spot a troll" thread, it swiftly turns into a "how to be a better troll" thread.

Pinot · 01/11/2012 12:55

Well fuck me pink and call me trolly, there is a lot of madness on MN right now.

Ahem.

OhDeerHauntingFENTON · 01/11/2012 12:56

ooh ello Fenton. Have you tried gargling with something salty?

YOU HAVE A FILTHY MIND :o

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 01/11/2012 13:01

I reckon we should ban namechanges. That is a really good idea.

Mind you I am one of those who namechanges mildly every so often to cover my tracks (!), but I am always recognisably getorf (this stupid name). I think the ability to namechange brings all sorts of troubles tbh.

Poledra · 01/11/2012 13:03

It's better than your original one, GetOrf....

No, I am never going to let you forget that Wink

SuePurblybilt · 01/11/2012 13:04

What was Getorf's name? FluffyUnicornMumee79?

Poledra · 01/11/2012 13:04

ZombieArmsDragOnTheFloor · 01/11/2012 13:18

I have two log ins and have had them for years. I can't remember why I set up two now though and I don't use the secondary one unless it has a witty namechange reserved that I want to use.

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 01/11/2012 13:18

It actually wasn't that bad as a namechoice

I've seen worse. Grin

At least it didn't have NUMBERS in.

Poledra · 01/11/2012 13:30
