Local - is it working for you?

Just looked at the new Mumsnet Local.
I see the first map, click through to my local area - Surrey.

Then I've looked at Soft Play, Playgrounds, Toddler Groups and they don't show anything. I just see the top banner, side things, footer, and the section title. Nothing below it.

What is it trying to load - a map?

I'm using Google Chrome on Windows Vista, if that's any help.

Techy Stuff:
DIV affected is: local_Main
DIV class side_buttons is empty
DIV class listingslist list1 is empty

HelenMumsnet · 18/10/2012 18:45

Hi nannynick.

It's empty because no one's loaded up any listings yet.

We need folks like you to load up lots of great info for us. We reckon MNer listings would be much better than listings we could filch acquire from other lists - cos you lot definitely know what's good and what's not, local to you.

HelenMumsnet · 18/10/2012 18:58

@nannynick

Oh that would explain it. So it's starting from scratch - we had better get listing things.

Hurray!

HelenMumsnet · 18/10/2012 19:06

@talkingnonsense

If I click on the link to my right (local) I get an error 404.

Yes. That bit should have been nixed.

Try local.mumsnet.com (no www)

That should take you to a luffly map and then to the Local you want.

HelenMumsnet · 18/10/2012 19:12

@talkingnonsense

Oh- I saw that yesterday but the scrolly map is horrid on my phone. I'll try on the computer later, thank you.

Which Local are you after?

HelenMumsnet · 19/10/2012 13:19

@wed99

ScarahStratton I'm with you- I don't get it !!!! Can't find the msgs from people in my area. Don't want to know what cafe or park to visit. I liked the old style local. If I had a question now about drinving lessons or recommend a good cleaner where do I look ???

The Local Talk boards will be up and running soon - that's where you can post questions etc.

All the past threads will be there, too: it's just taking a little while to migrate them over.

There's probably a listing section for cleaners, too.

HelenMumsnet · 19/10/2012 13:19

@ScarahStratton

I don't understand it at all :(

What don't you understand exactly, ScarahStratton?

HelenMumsnet · 19/10/2012 13:24

@redlac

the report listing isn't working :)

Really? Oh dear. What happens when you click it?

HelenMumsnet · 19/10/2012 14:02

@redlac

just reloads the page Helen. Was trying to report a double entry. I've just added and listing for our library and tried to report that and it just refreshes the page too.

OK, I'll flag that up to Tech - thanks for spotting!

HelenMumsnet · 20/10/2012 10:52

@ScarahStratton

Same as the others, I simply can't work out how to navigate it, and I'm not a complete idiot, I'm usually quite good at that sort of thing. Confused

Which Local are you looking in, Scarah?

HelenMumsnet · 20/10/2012 10:53

@cartblanche

aaaaargh where has it gone - y'know the chatty bit? Get the map and try to zoom in and find Glasgow and then manage to locate it and click and then ....nothing. I'm not an idiot either (I hope!)

Yes, sorry about that. The Local Talk boards will be made live pretty soon.

We had to take them down in order to migrate them from the main site. And the migrating bit is a bit fiddly. Tech are on it.

Am assured no existing Local Talk threads will be lost...

HelenMumsnet · 20/10/2012 18:05

@ScarahStratton

Lincolnshire.

It seems to be empty.

Although, thinking about it there is a distinct possibility that it actually is empty. Confused

Yes, it is a bit at the mo, isn't it?

Do please add some good stuff, if you can. We do want the listings to be things MNers like - rather than stuff filched from other listings places have.

HelenMumsnet · 22/10/2012 11:30

@ScarahStratton

Good stuff?

For here?

Go on. You can do it, honest you can!

HelenMumsnet · 22/10/2012 11:30

@cartblanche

Thanks for the explanation HelenMumsnet - glad I'm not going mad! Good luck with getting it all sorted - it sounds like it's a bit of a mare but can't wait to see it when it's firing on all four cylinders Smile

Thank you!

HelenMumsnet · 22/10/2012 11:30

@IvorHughJackolantern

I can't see anything when I click on Local, all the text is jumbled. I can't click on any of it.

Which Local are you trying to get to, IvorHughJackolantern?

HelenMumsnet · 22/10/2012 19:15

@IvorHughJackolantern

This is what I get:

Local
Find a local site
View the London map

Clicking on Local takes me to same page
Find a local site is in different, unclickable, enormous text
I don't want to view a London map Confused

If I click on 'add a listing' the whole thing hangs and I have to restart.

Which Local are you after, Ivor?

HelenMumsnet · 22/10/2012 19:16

@dancinginthemoonlight

I get that too ivor

And which one are you after, dancing?

HelenMumsnet · 22/10/2012 19:22

OK, you need local.mumsnet.com/kent (no www)

HelenMumsnet · 24/10/2012 12:36

@ScarahStratton

Right, I have 2 whinges.

Firstly, there's no description of what the Friendship Bench is, in Local Meet Ups.

Secondly, there isn't a clicky list at the bottom of the page to navigate you back to the boards.

Apart from that, Lincolnshire is just as empty as I thought it would be. Nothing ever happens here. :(

Good point re Friendship Bench - we'll look at that.

RE clicky list: there's a massive great 'Go to mumsnet.com' in top-right corner - does that help?

HelenMumsnet · 26/10/2012 12:12

@missnevermind

Still cant get onto Birmingham. Just get the same as Ivor and dancing.

You need local.mumsnet.com/birmingham (no www)

HelenMumsnet · 26/10/2012 12:15

@RonettePulaski

There're an awful lot of different fields to click, only to find them all empty. Some indication of if there actually are any Parks & Playgrounds or Classes would be good.

I get they need populating but like the main talk area perhaps it's a bit too subdivided?

have you looked at netmums they do local well

Thanks for this. We're hoping that, once folks have added some listings, it will all come together in a truly helpful way.

We thought about starting with listings filched from other sites already added but we want MN Local to be about things that MNers like and recommend, rather than just yer standard stuff you can find elsewhere.

Do please add some stuff if you have the time.

HelenMumsnet · 26/10/2012 12:15

@Birthandbaby

I am trying to add a listing to the Croydon Local. It just says, 'Please wait...'

I know the site is up and running because there is another listing in the category I want to put mine into.

Any ideas?

Oh dear. We'll go and see if there's a glitch.

I've just been talking to tech about this. Could you let me know which machine you're on and what browser you're using?

EmmaMumsnet · 26/10/2012 13:11

@nannynick

Adding a playground - that was fun! It wanted Times (I've put Dusk-Dawn daily, though it's probably 24/7), Start Date (random pick), End Date (random pick and add many many years). Things like start date, end date make sense for one off events, but not for ongoing, so error checking code may need some adjustment so if it's an ongoing event it does not insist on a start/end date.

Tech are onto that one Nick

It's not quite all working yet Ronette, but we do have a solution coming to this one, promise.

EmmaMumsnet · 26/10/2012 13:15

@piprabbit

I don't like it.

My area (Essex) is split into random areas: Essex; Chelmsford; Colchester & Harwich; Southend on Sea.

Listings for my area could appear in Essex or Chelmsford or Southend on Sea. I cant be arsed to search all 3 areas. Nor can I be bothered to create listings in triplicate.

Also all the information about Children's Centres etc. that I lovingly created in the old Mid Essex local area has disappeared.

I've started adding new listings tonight - but it's a slow process.

Hi piprabbit,
we're working on pulling in the old listings, but like talk, it's a tricky migration job. Also, there will be a My Local Sites function which allows you to switch between sites really easily.
