Hello. We've been aware for a while now that MN Local isn't all it could be and we've been beavering away for several months now to make it much, much better.

And today's the Grand Unveiling of the all-new, all-singing, all-dancing (well, OK, not quite singing and dancing just yet) Mumsnet Local

We've reorganised the Local sites a bit (they were a bit random, geographically speaking, before). And, if you go to your nearest Mumsnet Local site, you'll see there's much more to it and it's much easier to find your way about. There are loads more categories for listings and space for reviews, and you'll find nearly new inside an expanded Classifieds section - which should make your Mumsnet Local an altogether more helpful place to hang out. Don't worry, we haven't lost the talk threads from old Local. They'll be reappearing in the new sites very soon.

Some Mumsnet Local sites are still a bit light on listings and info (we're working on that right now) but, if you'd like a look at what we're hoping all Mumsnet Locals will look like pretty darn soon, do have a butcher's at Bath. If you want to share something with other Mumsnetters on any of the sites, just click on Add a Listing (the pink button on the right just under the navigation bar).

Sites that are not far behind include Bedford, Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Bolton & Bury, Manchester & Trafford, Bournemouth & Poole, Brighton & Hove, Bristol, Buckinghamshire, Cheshire, Exeter, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Kent, Milton Keynes, Oxford, Portsmouth, Southampton, Surrey, and in London? Barnet, Lambeth, Hackney, Haringey, Hillingdon, Islington, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Wandsworth and Waltham Forest boroughs.

And we're hoping all the other Local sites, including those in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, will be hot on their tails. We're looking to entice people to look after these sites, but more on that soon.

We've designed an easy-to-use Meet Ups page. If you want to volunteer to organise a regular meet-up in your area, just email [email protected] . There are more bits and pieces and snazzy new features to come, too. Once --Tech's had a bit of a lie down

We do hope you like what you see. Do let us know what you think - as ever, all feedback is most welcome.

@mumblecrumble

Exciting - I will say soemthing scandelous... i always use netmums for locally stuff....but this looks better.....

So we put in hte content?

Will it be modertaed ?

Thanks mumblecrumble Smile
It would be great if you could add some content. There will still be the report button on talk and on listings, so yes it will be post-moderated in the same way as the rest of Mumsnet.

EmmaMumsnet · 18/10/2012 16:03

@MaryZed

The trouble with using the term "local editors" is that it sounds like a real job with, erm pay. You know, money instead of Gin and Cake

Obviously if they do make it a real job I will be top of the Irish list [hopeful], unfortunately I couldn't do it voluntarily as it would eat into my mumsnetting time real life.

The idea is that Local Editors get to keep some of the Local Advertising money because they'll be asked to do more than Tsarinas. We felt, with the best will in the world, that the Tsarina model wasn't working in all areas, so a bit of incentive might make a difference. People can still join in as Local Ambassadors if they don't have the time to be a Local Editor. PM me if you're interested?

EmmaMumsnet · 18/10/2012 17:48

@kekouan

Oh never mind, it seems to be working now Grin

There will be more stuff in the Oxford site ? that one's got a Local Editor beavering away

EmmaMumsnet · 18/10/2012 17:50

@ZombTEE

BTW I'm still getting 'this feature coming soon' all over Belfast Local on the links.

You may know this. I know I'm totally confused as to what's been reported and was hasn't. Grin

More Gin, Wine and Cake for Emma.

not all the bells and whistles are working yet. Listings are there now, talk is next and the other stuff is coming in the next few weeks

EmmaMumsnet · 18/10/2012 17:53

@GreenShadow

Oohh, it works!

Just posted a local playground!

Will have to take some photos and do some more.

But it is insisting I put in a start and end date for the 'event' which is pointless.

I know the start and end date seem counter-intuitive. It's so that the listings remain up-to-date and someone checks them more than once a decade (and something techy to do with advanced search). Just put in today's date as the start date and then make the end date as far away as possible.

EmmaMumsnet · 18/10/2012 17:56

@dinkystinky

Emma - my first post made it on - just tried posting 2 other ones and its happened again! I give up.

Also agree that having to put in a start and end date period is really annoying - particularly for classes that run during term time only year round.

It's probably because when we fix a problem, the site goes down momentarily. Because we've been fixing lots of things, it's happened quite a lot today. Should be better now

EmmaMumsnet · 19/10/2012 11:08

@Bicnod

Is there going to be a Winchester one? There used to be - now only Hampshire, Portsmouth or Southampton...

Ta :)

There are Local Editors for Hampshire, Portsmouth and Southampton, so listings will start filling up in your area. Once Hampshire has got more listings in, you'll be able to filter listings down to Winchester

EmmaMumsnet · 19/10/2012 11:13

@oldsilver

Hmm this is all a bit of a faff, had to type in the local.mumsnet/Bristol just to have a look - it won't let me follow any links from anywhere. Most of it says not up and running yet. For instance the map doesn't work to find my local site. And when I did finally get to mine, checked out the meet-up section and the map below shows Lambeth which I am sure is not in the West Country Grin

Think I'll wait til it's all up and running properly before I try to have a look again.

Thank goodness the local christmas meet-up thread was moved, or might never have been able to get to it Smile

The link to Bristol is working from the UK map. The map in the meet-ups section is just a holding image until someone volunteers to become a Local Ambassador and adds a meet-up in the information box, then the map becomes live. Fancy being one of the first for Bristol?

EmmaMumsnet · 19/10/2012 11:15

@songbird85

Hi - MNHQ I am another tsarina who hasn't had an email Sad

Have you looked in your spam? I emailed every Tsarina on the list, but several got back to me only recently, saying they'd found it buried with the other tinned meat

EmmaMumsnet · 19/10/2012 11:19

@FarelyKnuts

Ireland not working at all? mutter mutter bloody typical :o

Which browser are you looking on Farely? It's working fine on mine?

EmmaMumsnet · 19/10/2012 11:20

@CouthyMowEatingBraiiiiinz

Tried googling local.mumsnet/Colchester on safari, and got a message from my Internet provider flash up saying "sorry, local.mumsnet does not exist or is not available".

Try local.mumsnet.com/colchester (you need the .com and the small c)

EmmaMumsnet · 19/10/2012 11:22

@Jacksmania

I might have missed it, but has MNHQ ever replied to my question about whether it would be possible to set up an international Mumsnet Local?

We will definitely look into this once we've got the UK up and running

EmmaMumsnet · 19/10/2012 11:25

@Jacksmania

It might be a UK website but there are tons of us all over the world. And I'd at least like an answer. [still grumpy]

Proffers homemade coffee from own beans with some chocolate, salt and caramel thrown on the top

EmmaMumsnet · 19/10/2012 11:27

@CouthyMowEatingBraiiiiinz

Right. I can see what it looks like on the mobile site. Very snazzy, if a slightly unfetching shade of green.

Why can't I see it on the App?

There isn't a Local App yet? If you get all your presents before Christmas, poor Santa's out of a job

EmmaMumsnet · 19/10/2012 11:31

@ZombTEE

Well, they haven't answered half my questions either!

Which questions Tee? I've crossed you off on my notepad, what did I miss?

EmmaMumsnet · 19/10/2012 11:50

@JaquelineHyde

Hello again

still can't get it to work. I'm in the Eastbourne area.

Are you trying local.mumsnet.com/east-sussex?

There's no Local Editor for East Sussex yet, only Brighton and Hove, so there won't be any content in there, unless you feel like adding some

EmmaMumsnet · 19/10/2012 11:52

@ComradeJing

HQ is there any chance we could have some global local sites? Say one for the middle east, one for HK, one for Singapore, one for Aus?

We'll definitely look into it ComradeJing

EmmaMumsnet · 19/10/2012 11:55

@Bicnod

Thanks EmmaMumsnet - what will happen to the Winchester chat threads?

They will be imported into the new site by tech as soon as is humanly possible

JustineMumsnet · 19/10/2012 11:57

@nickeldaisical

yeay! i've been spreading the word and the Kent pages have got quite a few bits on now! Grin

Thanks so much to everyone spreading the word - it's going to really make a difference when we get the sites populated and humming and really useful.

So sorry for all the tech glitches - emma and techs working their bottoms off to fix em, but it was a super complicated project with lots of new features and made even more complicated I'm told by the fact that it was a relaunch of old local rather than a completely new thing.

But we will get there soonest and hopefully local sites will be full of interesting and helpful info.

EmmaMumsnet · 19/10/2012 11:58

@nickeldaisical

yeay! i've been spreading the word and the Kent pages have got quite a few bits on now! Grin

Nice work Nickel, I've just had a snoop at Kent, it's looking better already Smile

EmmaMumsnet · 19/10/2012 12:03

@ZombTEE

Oh about why we have to have a new name for local as opposed to having the choice and the idea about pinning a location rather than putting in a postcode.

Not actual questions, I guess, more acknowledgement of suggestions. Grin

Suggestions acknowledged and added to my 'think about' list Grin
Actually, I'd just like to say thanks to everyone for all their feedback. It's really helpful to get all your ideas and suggestions.

EmmaMumsnet · 19/10/2012 13:37

@stealthsquiggle

I just looked at Worcestershire on my android phone. It now looks very pretty, if content-free. There are dozens of Worcestershire MNers - surely one of them wants to be a local editor?

I'm all ears?

EmmaMumsnet · 19/10/2012 13:39

@FarelyKnuts

Have tried on Mozilla and on Android Phone EmmaMumsnet. Ireland doth not be clickable (Only NI).

Ah, sorry Farely, I misunderstood, Ireland isn't there yet

HelenMumsnet · 19/10/2012 13:39

@Woozley

No content in mine yet.

Add some, add some. Go on, you know you want to

HelenMumsnet · 19/10/2012 16:49

@seabuckthorn

I can't find my local. It's all a bit confusing. The Bath one looks good though.

Which one do you want, seabuckthorn?
