HelenMumsnet · 03/10/2012 18:27

Hello. We hope you all already feel you can talk to us at MNHQ anytime - either by starting a thread in Site Stuff or by mailing us or reporting a post.

But we also thought it might be useful/interesting to have a live discussion about how how about we do things re moderation etc...

So, we're hosting our very own MNHQ live webchat!

Please do join us at 1pm on Thursday to ask (more or less) anything you want. And, if you can't make then, do feel free to post a nice question here in advance.

@SuperB0F

Oh, I've got one more request:

A few weeks ago I asked if Tech would release the name BOF to me when he had time to sort it out (taken but no posts, etc), and I was told it might be possible.

If I promise to send smut ONE MORE TIME, may I please have it? Even if it's hard? Very hard?

As far a I remember, we did look at this one for you but that name was assigned to an Mner who had used it

So that makes reassigning the name tricky. As all her old posts would now look like yours - unless we deleted them all, which might be a bit mean.

I'll have another look, though, and mail you.

@Tee2072

Actually, I really want to know who is making Olivia a TSSDNCOP sampler for Christmas.

Don't think we've got anyone on TeamEmbroidery.

She'll have to put up with a Charlie Sheen mug.

@LtEveDallas

Oh, sorry Blush no need to bring out the crying puppies.

I just read some of the threads that turn out to be trolls and you've generally had excellent support, advice and personal accounts up to the point that Trollery is suspected/discovered.

To me that's more important.

Oh, or what about deleting the Trolls posts? Although I expect that would just make the thread more confusing.

Hmm

Yes, on those occasions, we quite often just quietly ban the troll and leave the thread - if it's really helpful to others and isn't just page after pages of "bog off, you troll" posts.

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 14:14

@senua

When will this site be re-named parentsnet ?

Well, not parentsnet because that doesn't roll off the tongue but something similarly inclusive that doen't reinforce the stereotype that child-rearing is principally women's work.

Never! We actually considered Parentsnet when we first started tbh but it's such a meh! name, we instead opted for our strapline - by parents for parents.

I see where you are coming from and it's a point often made but the truth is though Mumsnet is far from being a site about parenting - which I completely agree is a 50-50 thing - and it's not just for mums. We have teachers, childminders, dads, people ttc. It's really a site for (mostly) women to talk about everything and anything. From relationships to jobs, to style and beauty to property, you name it.

And I don't think a space for (mostly) women is a bad thing, per se?

@Hullygully

SERIOUS POINT ALERT

I have just been struck by a hinteresting thought.

It is us old hand regs who are complaining about deletions. And the deletions we are complaining about are the ones where we tell people they are being arses, thereby self-moderating and keeping the love.

But there aren't more deletions than there were in the past?

HelenMumsnet · 04/10/2012 14:17

@SuperB0F

Thanks Helen, I couldn't find any posts when I did a search though. Would you like to see my bum?

And that would help how exactly?

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 14:17

And anyway it's what Maryzed said - you can tell someone they are are being an arse. You can't tell someone they are an arse. And the rules haven't changed on that.

HelenMumsnet · 04/10/2012 14:19

@Blatherskite

You could always stick a huge reminder on the name change screen?

That's a good suggestion. We'll look into doing that.

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 14:22

@StarlightMcKenzie

Why does your logo have a baby peeing in his mum's eye?

Because at Mumsnet, we tell it like it is.

HelenMumsnet · 04/10/2012 14:23

@FrankWippery

BOF - can I please?

How about having a month where deletions are seriously pulled in. See if we can trundle along once again telling people that they are being twats when they properly are. I would hope that you'll find that the wimpy reporter types might just see that if they stop being twats, people might stop calling them twats.

I think bigots, cunts, twats, tossers, etc should be pulled up on it. As so many have said, telling someone they are behaving like a twat when they are is fair enough.

This makes sense to me, but my drugs are starting to work so it may not make sense to anyone else.

We think there are probably ways of indicating that someone's opinions are ridiculous without calling them a twat, no?

HelenMumsnet · 04/10/2012 14:26

@FunnysInLaJardin

thats what I used to love most about MN, the self moderation, because if you were actually being a nob you could be sure someone would come along and tell you. All very satisfactory.

Whereas a simple 'you sound smug to me' was enough to get deleted t'other day.

Anyhoo I think that point has now been made over 1000 times, so I'll leave it Ricky

By self-moderation, we don't mean to say that you folks are the moderators and can tell people they are nobs. We mean that when one person posts a load of nonsense, in your opinion, you are quite free to post your different and opposing opinion.

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 14:26

So, Christ this is exhausting. I'm almost feeling sorry for the politicos now. Almost.

Thanks to all for your contributions - on this chat but of course, more widely - and for making this place what it is (whatever that is Wink).

ps We will be back!

HelenMumsnet · 04/10/2012 14:27

@MaryZed

So can we say "your posts on this thread are ridiculous" if they are then?

Because that is causing the problem. You say we can, but if we do, we are deleted.

For example, Funnys' "you sound smug to me" and my "your opinions are bigoted", and similar.

Your post on this thread are ridiculous = fine. not deletable.

"You sound smug to me" = not so fine. "Your posts/argument sounds smug" is fine, depending on the context of course.

ie you can attack the opinion but not the poster/person.

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 14:30

@Blatherskite

Poor old Justine and the other MNHQers can't even say "thanks, the webchat was fun but we'll be off now" like most webchat suckers guests do as we know they're all still sitting there :)

So true Smile
Mind you I reckon everyone looks back on, don't you?

HelenMumsnet · 04/10/2012 14:31

Thanks. It's been real but I will collapse without my lunchtime biscuit and gin quota, so we must go.

Do please mail us anytime on [email protected] or report a post if you'd like to keep arguing the toss about deletions you have any other Qs.

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 14:34

@Hullygully

If someone says:

People on sickness benefits are scrounging bastards with big tellies

They deserve to be told they are arses, not just countered with

Well, actually I think they aren't

It doesn't cut the mustard.

What's so hard about saying "your post makes you sound like an arse and here's why" and then proceed to demolish with powerful argument?

And by the way whatever happened to PARD (thought that was your thang?)

HelenMumsnet · 04/10/2012 14:35

@TantrumsAndBalloons

Yes but in context. Cos you can call someone a cunt on a less serious thread, joking around. And that was deleted yesterday too.

It was a joke I hope

Yes, jokey cunts are fine

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 14:51

@TheDoctrineOfSnatch

Already am Grin. Disclaimer - this only applies to benefit scrounger type thread as per example.

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 19:20

@LineRunner

Ignored. I was at work.

No, no, no - you weren't ignored. You nicely thanked us for stuff and we internally glowed but we should, of course, have said you're welcome.

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 20:16

@MrsKwazii

I have a bit of a moan about webchats. I'm never sure if I'm going to be able to make them, so tend to post a question early in the thread. However, these then tend to get ignored as the web 'chat' effect comes into play - as it should really otherwise it'd just be a Q&A I suppose - but it can be a bit disheartening.

There is also the possibility that some of my questions are mindnumbingly dull and quite rightly ignored. I don't like that version of events as much though Grin

We do try to get guests to answer pre-entered questions in advance. I now know how hard it is to keep up if you don't do some preparation, so we will redouble efforts on this.

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 20:17

@Solo

I don't know anything about the previous nickname amnesty, but couldn't a delete button be added so that we can delete our own as we wish?

Sounds like a good idea to me. Will see if whether Techs think it's possible.

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 20:22

@MmeLindor

I'd like to thank MNHQ for the incredible opportunities they have given me this year. It's been amazing.

I'd like to know how many posts are reported in a day, and what percentage of those are deleted.

And where you see yourselves in 10 years? Could there be a TeenNet. Or a PreTeenNet?

Au contraire - thank you for all your wonderfulness.
I think H said about 200 reports come in roughly, not sure about deletions but will check. And in 10 years I'll be happy if I'm still drawing breath tbh. I'm reminded of that opening line of the lecture Steve Jobs gave to Stanford students: "Remember, we all die soon" [cheerful].

Seriously though there is NO WAY I'm doing a pre-teen or teens net - not given what I know about them...
Imagine every post to TNHQ would be: "You're so wierd" Grin

Anyway I'm not really here - just tidying up a few leftovers. Good eves.

JustineMumsnet · 04/10/2012 20:34

@SoupDragon

I was ignored too. [sulk]

But, then again, I forgot about the whole webcast thing anyway Blush

Weren't you just rude about OliviaMN Soupy?
