Trolls & Membership

I know it has been discussed before - but I don't know what the outcome was.

Would having a paid membership deter some of the trolls?

Who would be prepared to pay to be a member of Mumsnet?

MNHQ - would it have a detrimental affect on your advertising revenue (greater than you would receive in membership revenue)?

How else can we get MN back to how it used to be - it has been bloody horrible lately :(

The reason we're getting more trolls is because MN is bigger and more famous so attarcts more weirdos. You can't make is smaller again without heading into Moldie territory.

RoundOrangeHead · 28/08/2011 19:21

I like name changing which is why no-one knows me

GypsyMoth · 28/08/2011 19:21

Sockpuppetry..... Yes, it's one of the worst kinds of trolling imo!

PinotsWolefCubs · 28/08/2011 19:31

Just don't 'give' more than you can afford to lose. Or stick to the silly threads avec moi Wink

I wouldn't pay, MN is good but I can't afford to pay as my income is very very low.

AurraSing · 28/08/2011 19:36

I wouldn't pay membership for a club that would have me as a member...
I doubt very much if the worst trolls are new members, i suspect they are more regular and know which buttons to press.

Idon't think it is fair to charge,
mn hq should just be quicker to act imo, or we should be quicker to report...

or ignore them

IfYouSeeACrocodile · 28/08/2011 19:42

I was recently called a trollhunterhunter - beat that! Grin I really don't get why a) people do become so so emotionally invested and b) if people suspect a troll they feel the need to shout it from the rooftops.

SuePurbly's idea is a good one, so you can see a poster is a regular without being able to see who they are.

IfYouSeeACrocodile · 28/08/2011 19:43

And actually I think the troll hunters have a more detrimental effect to the boards overall than the trolls themselves - but then again I do love a good story :)

No they won't. There is a regular namechanger on these boards who actually changes mid thread. They refused to confirm they are not a namechanger, although it extremely obvious they are, and won't allow posts to make others aware.

bruffin have you told MNHQ?

bruffin · 28/08/2011 19:52

This person doesn't start threads, they just post a lot on the same subject. It is so obvious who they are but MN refuse to do anything about it.

Yes Pinot I have reported them, but MN just asked me what I knew about the poster, then I never heard anything again. They have namechanged in at least two threads and I have had a least 4 names that I know of.

bruffin · 28/08/2011 19:56

" and I have had a least 4 names that I know of."

sorry that should be
" and they have had at least 4 names"

PinotsWolefCubs · 28/08/2011 19:57

Bloody hell that's rubbish. I don't like that at all - seems really underhand and duplicitous. And naive eejits like me will fall for it every time I bet.

reelingintheyears · 28/08/2011 20:01

I wouldn't pay.

Maybe people should only be able to nc if they are being regularly abused/stalked by trolls.

I'm thinking of the Feminism topic here where certain prolific posters have had problems with stalkers.

It is Pinot, don't know why MN want to protect her/him.
