taking things back to m&s without a receipt, how do they know I haven't just stolen it?

I have a watch to take back,have lost receipt .

I want to exchange.Can they tell by scanning it that I have in fact paid for it by credit card and not just popped it into my handbag on the way to the customer service desk?

wouldn't you go to the service desk first and then with a voucher or something, look for a replacement watch?

I did once see a teenager getting a hard time at the M&S refunds desk but she wanted a cash refund and the assistant was pointing out that the skirt she was taking back had a stain on it and had clearly been worn (she also didn't have a receipt). Chancer
