Opinions wanted - is this bike to girly for a boy?

After extensive research I have decided to buy ds1 an Islabike for his 4th birthday only to find that they only have the pink colourway in stock have a look. I think that he would be happy with the pink but am worried that when he starts school in September the other kids might tell him it's a girl's bike. Obviously it's expensive so I don't want him to go off it after 6 months and also want ds2 to like it when it's passed on to him. What do you think?

Tricky. At 4 they are just starting to get more rigid about what is "for girls" and "for boys", I think. I suspect that you're right and while he'd be happy with it now the colour might become a sticking point in September.

How long until they get the other colourway back in stock? Would he be up to waiting a while for the bike itself? And what about the slightly larger Cnoc 16 -- do they only have that in pink too?

..I mean too girly

They said they're getting the yellow colourway back in at the beginning of April, his birthday is in a couple of weeks so not that long a wait I suppose but it would spoil the fun of spending his birthday running after him in the park! When I measured his legs he's not at the minimum measurement for the Cnoc 16, has very short legs compared to his height, so I'm concerned that he wouldn't be able to ride it. But I would like him to have some growing room, particularly as it's not cheap. Aargh, what to do!

He might find it a bit girly, yes. I was trying to buy that same one today for DD and had the same problem because I want someting that is truly unisex. She is too small for the Cnoc 16 too.

I wish they did the Cnoc in red like their other bikes.

i don't think ti is girly, and neither do either of my older children. dt1 would love it.

Does he generally like pink? One of my younger two loves pink and won't hear of the idea that it is only for girls.

My DS 7 and would not be happy with pink. Has hated both pink and purple since he was about 3.

I think it is a lot of money to spend on something that he may not use in a few months.

And yes even if he is ok with the pink his friends will say something!

BirdyArms · 05/03/2009 20:26

Thanks for your opinions. I think I'm going to play it safe and not get the pink. He is ambivalent towards pink at the moment, yellow is his favourite, but I think he could easily be turned against it some time soon! I am going to call Islabikes in the morning and see how sure they are about getting the yellow at the beginning of April.

I wouldn't go for pink - even if he doesn't mind, his little friends might be horrid about it.

An awful lot to spend on a 4 year old's bike anyway! (IMHO)

BirdyArms · 05/03/2009 20:48

Hmmm, they have a good reputation but I agree it is a quite ridiculous amount for something that will be outgrown fairly soon, although he does have a younger brother. Perhaps the unavailability of the yellow one is a sign that I should get myself down to Decathlon!

Sorry - all our bikes come from Freecycle (appropriately named!) then go back there when outgrown - I've never paid for a bike yet! Ignore me - I am a cheapskate.

The pink flashes are decals - just peel them off. Bike is expensive for what it is. My wife's company have factories in Taiwan and China making the same thing. They are incredibly cheap to bring into the UK - that's a huge mark up on that one.

BirdyArms · 10/03/2009 20:18

27T, just saw your very helpful message. So where can I get the same thing much cheaper?
