They are, aren't they? I think secondhand is the way to go - we got a nice-if-boring Habitat striped sofa and armchair a few years ago for £100.

Alternatively there are loads of mail order places, the ones that have little ads in the back of the weekend supplements - mostly based in S Wales (it's what some of them do now instead of coal mining I suppose). They look OK and their prices are reasonable and you have 3 weeks to send them back if you don't like them after all. They generally come in 3 seater, 2 seater, sofabed, chair and footstool. I remember Milano they sold some of their sofas from a shop on Tottenham Court Rd my sister got a Milano sofa bed, really comfortable... did not realise they did chair ones though, thanks Jan. I like the Charlie too but I wish I could see it folded out. Some of the other ones are gorgeous though .

We bought a really cute little sofa today from these people, they were recommended by the Evening Standard. Leather isn't really my thing but my ds, and if I am honest myself, seem incapable of not covering fabric sofas with grime. Dh is hoping leather might fare better. £500 isnt too bad, the leather was really soft and they seemed to be sturdy... I'm hoping it will do the trick.
