MP3 player for 6-year-old dd?

I've been thinking of getting one for dd for Christmas as I'm stuck for ideas this year.

I'm a bit technologically, ahem, out of date re. this kind of thing so I need to ask some stupid questions:

  1. I have a mac - would I need a specific kind of mp3 player?
  1. What would be a good, cheap model for dd to get to grips with?
  1. Do you have a child with one?
  1. Do you have to listen to it through headphones?

alas Creative Zen Stone can't be used with a mac.
