What are families honestly spending on their weekly food shop?

cost of weekly food shop - Our food shop cost is crippling me. Our weekly food shop is £300 for 2 adults , 14 year old and a cat. My husband thinks that’s normal and is just the cost of living when I know my friends are paying half that. His response is well they are not being honest and they are actually paying more.

I can’t continue paying £300 a week, it’s insane I know . I’ve tried talking to him that it’s too much and he’s blaming me stressing over it on “ time of the month” as usual.

My question is , honestly what are families spending on their food shop weekly.

Around £200 including cleaning products but a lot of lunches are bought out of the home and we eat out once a week. That’s for 2 adults and two adult DD’s. Wine is extra.

About £150.

Thats 2 adults, 15, 13, 11 and 7 year old, 2 cats and 2 small dogs.

Doesn't include lunches for 3 of the children as the smallest two have free school lunches as they're in primary, and the 13 year old buys a lunch at school. Eldest is home educated so he eats at home. The ones at school all go to (free) breakfast club.

In holidays it goes up to about 200 a week, max

I read this as £300 per month and thought yeah, that's good budgeting. But £300 a week?! That's insane, yeah that really is a lot, at least double a week more than the norm

Our household comprises just us two old fogies of 68 and 71. DH spends about £60-75 a week in Tesco and I spend about £100 every 8-10 days or so in Sainsbury's.

We never buy alcohol and rarely buy meat. We occasionally buy fish. The vast majority of what we buy is fresh fruit and vegetables, yogurt, cheese, pulses, tofu, tempeh, peanut butter, nuts, seeds and evoo. The latter is a big luxury nowadays, as the price has more or less doubled in recent years. I tend to buy organic produce if it's available, so that hikes the costs up significantly.

Gosh that does seem high. Hope you can find a way to bring it down

I have my shopping delivered so I only buy what I’m going to use/need and it controls the cost too

the only top up I need to do is berries as they don’t last a week so I buy enough for 3/4 days depending on what the app says is their shelf life (it varies week to week!)

That is a huge amount but I agree food prices are insane. We are (2 adults 2 children) on a tight budget and I've had come up with some ways to reduce it, id say we spend about £70 per week. I've started trying to get as much reduced food as possible, yesterday I went to Sainsburys and spent £30, I added it up when I got home and full price it would've been just over £100, a lot of it is now in the freezer, it means we can eat very well on a budget so worth trying. Also I make use of Olio sometimes too.

Lord, that’s a lot! We are 2 adults, plus 14 & 8 year olds. Our actual Tesco delivery once a week is usually £100-120, plus I’ll do one or two snack runs for top ups, milk, etc to Lidl which are maybe £20-30, so maybe £120-200 a week total. The occasional sandwich or coffee out too, but I don’t really keep track of those.

This doesn’t include alcohol (I don’t drink, if Dh wants some beers on occasion, he’ll stop and buy them) or pet food (we have a dog, but buy her food in bulk separately. It does include all toiletries and cleaning supplies though.

Dc have school lunches, so this doesn’t include lunches for them in term time, but Dh and I eat 3 meals a day at home so does include all our day to day food, very rarely buy anything out.

£130 for this week's shop for 2 adults and a toddler (who eats for England 😆). This included two picture frames from Habitat and nappies!

We do 4 x meat dinners and 3x veg dinners per week to keep costs down... we do splurge on some low upf / healthy stuff and mix in cheap fruit and veg too (I.e. in season stuff). Hardly buy branded cereals and all that.

We try to stick to about £140 a week with an 11, 8 & 3yo…generally we go over and end up spending about £160-£180 a week…do you meal plan? I meal plan & double up meals so we eat 2 of the meals twice in the week…I don’t meal plan for Friday / Sunday as generally we do takeout Friday & are at my parents Sunday but if we don’t do those it’s usually freezer teas or anything leftover as I try to freeze any leftovers too

What are you eating?? That’s crazy money.
i used to live next door to a Waitrose and it was the only shop for miles so ai shopped mainly there for a few years. I would struggle to spend that for our 2 adult and 2 child family even at Waitrose.
do you eat a lot or is half of that alcohol?? Do you eat steak every day? It just seems a lot. Do you break it down and see what you are actually spending?
during the pandemic ai was spending that much as Waitrose was the only place I could go and making food was a main activity. I put on loads of weight and spent a fortune which I then had to rectify.

When kids are home from uni, there are 4 adults (plus their friends are here a lot so lots of snacks!!!) and 2 dogs and we spend about £300 per week including toiletries. We do eat out a couple of times a week on top of that.

£400 per month for 3 adults - pet food bought separately.

1 adult, 1 teen boy and 1 cat and I spend at least £75 on the ‘big’ shop and then probably at least a further £30-50 on top up shops so at least £100-150 a week realistically. It’s ridiculous, you seem to barely get anything for your money now, I remember before I split with my ex I could do a good shop on £50 and the fridge and freezer would be full and then maybe £25 over the week on bits and bobs. It’s double that now

There is just me and one cat. Ranges between £80 - £100 a week. Includes a bottle of wine, cleaning stuff, etc.

On average £80-£100 weekly for two of us, a bottomless pit of a 3 year old and a very greedy cat. That average includes cat food and laundry/toilet roll supplies which really bump the price up some weeks!

2 adults and 1 small child and we spend about £100-125 a week on a "big" shop, and then probably top up with £20-30 of random stuff from other shops too. But we have specific diets that includes some more expensive "free from" stuff.

Yes, also about half that - 4 adults (20yo and 17yo boys who eat loads) so unless your cat is eating caviar every day I’d say yours is high. Where do you shop? We’re Aldi/Lidl all the way - if we went to Sainsbury’s it would be much higher.

You're spending way more than we are! And we have hollow legged teenagers! Ours is about £100 a week. That's also buying frozen chicken and fish to supplement the dogs fairly expensive biscuits.

Ocado and I’m not massively careful, but we don’t drink alcohol really at all, £150-170 a week. I could get that down to £110 at Ocado. I could get it lower elsewhere. 13 year old and 11 year old take packed lunches four days a week. We only eat out / takeaways once or twice a month.
