What are families honestly spending on their weekly food shop?

cost of weekly food shop - Our food shop cost is crippling me. Our weekly food shop is £300 for 2 adults , 14 year old and a cat. My husband thinks that’s normal and is just the cost of living when I know my friends are paying half that. His response is well they are not being honest and they are actually paying more.

I can’t continue paying £300 a week, it’s insane I know . I’ve tried talking to him that it’s too much and he’s blaming me stressing over it on “ time of the month” as usual.

My question is , honestly what are families spending on their food shop weekly.

It would be higher. He demands all the branded stuff which is half the reason it’s so high. I tried buying Lidls own crumpets once and he got a bit verbally abusive as I came back without walburtons ones

He sounds hideous. And frankly, the least he could if you're spending £300 a week on food ia support some local and independent businesses. Imagine the difference that would make.

I wondered if this was a wind up when you said he referenced your period making you grumpy all the time, now I definitely think it is or you're taking abuse about crumpets, come on now.

I have friends who are not on a high income but shop in Waitrose, and they spend £25 on small bottles of shampoo and would never buy a £7.00 bottle of wine. they are round of the fact they've never set foot in Aldi or Lidl. They do occasionally shop in a smaller Tesco which is much closer to the than Waitrose. It's part of the cost of having a superior ego . They go without other things though.theybseem happy and content as both are in the same wavelength,

Does your household income stretch to covering his ego and specifically does he cover the extra cost without detriment to othe family budget items.. Was this trait part of his upbringing ? . Are you financially stretched as a family or is it that you would like to make savings to pay for other stuff like holidays?

So you know why your food cost is so high, could have said this in your first post.

Yes I hate waste too. I was brought up to use up everything (there's very little that goes to waste in our house) and like you I will change meals in order to use everything up...the only problem is that we all have big appetites so we still end up spending a lot on food despite the non waste and despite buying non-branded products :(

The irony is before I met him he lived on frozen pizza and chicken nuggets . I’ve always pretty much cooked from scratch and because it that, Im practically his full time chef as he can’t do it himself.

True , but I think he’s gaslighting me or hes seriously out of touch as he reckons £300 is normal, hence the post. I tried addressing it with him before the post and I got abuse. I guess the reason for the post is validation for my sanity.

OP you are sane - he is being unreasonable.

This is our issue too - certain things we have to get from certain places which are more expensive as there are limited things dd will eat, so to get a good balance of nutrients it costs more. We are about £90 a week for 1 adult, 15yo and dog.

Sorry OP - your DH sounds like an absolute arsehole. My abusive ex would also use my time of the month as an excuse any time I would confront him. I think you have greater things to address rather than your food budget. Sorry op x

Including top ups i am at around £130 a week with me, a teen and an 11 year old. £300 seems very high to me.

I'm with Delia smith on this one- it wasn't about brands but husbands who always wanted steak not made up family dishes- if he shops for the steak (or brands or whatever) and pays for them, fine otherwise if you are in charge of the food it's butt out and let you get on with it.

Our last food shop came out at £49.67. That lasted us two weeks.

That’s insane! I spend approx £70 per week for 1 adult, 1 x 17 year old and 2 cats including household stuff like loo roll. I get my milk, bread and eggs delivered by a local farm so you could add on £12 a week for that but that’s all!

Also - verbally abusive? Blaming your “hormones”? You are his full time chef? Why are you putting up with this??

Family of 3 (2 adults, one 6 year old). Weekly food order is £170 plus up to another £10 to £30 per week for household supplies (detergent etc). I do find this quite tight and could easily spend another £50 on food. Dog and cat cost £100 a month in food. It really does add up!

£85 a week for two adults and one fifteen year old. Includes all meals and cleaning and toilet roll products and drinks. No alcohol. We eat very good food,delivered by Tesco club card do good discounts I always buy the bargains. It can be done, lovely food and enough of it but no ready meals. Paying more would be throwing our holiday money away

Please can you give a rough meal plan on how £85 does breakfasts, lunches and dinners for three people plus cleaning products and toilet roll?
