Is £500 enough for a decent king size divan and mattress?

Hello all. What sort of budget do you think I'll need to be looking at for a King size divan and mattress? I need something that's going to last well but it doesn't need to be terribly high end, there'll only be me using it. Is £500 reasonable or will i only get cheap rubbish for that amount? And would I get a better deal buying them separately or buying as a bundle. Thanks

Our ‘mid range’ bed and mattress was £1300…

I think you'll struggle to find anything decent for that much. The cost is mainly the mattress. A cheap mattress is much worse than a cheap frame.

bugalugs45 · 10/07/2026 18:56

I bought ours about 7 years ago and paid £1000 ish , John Lewis , it wasn’t top of the range by any stretch but it’s decent and has lasted well.
I think £500 isn’t a lot truth told, can you stretch a bit further ?

Overtheatlantic · 10/07/2026 18:56

You might be better off looking at Facebook marketplace.

bugalugs45 · 10/07/2026 18:58

I would recommend John Lewis as they’re independent,
no hard sell as not on commission, I took my mum to dreams and the hard sell got right on my nerves !

Thanks for the replies.

I can indeed go higher and it sounds like I need to. I've had my current metal bed frame for ages so really didn't know what the average cost of a new one was.

Are there any online retailers you'd recommend?

Must admit, I got my king size bed frame from a charity shop for £70 and then spent money on the mattress. It isn’t a divan, just a nice metal bed frame.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 10/07/2026 19:01

Does it have to be king size? If it's just for you maybe a double would be fine? We got DS a double bedframe and mattress in Ikea recently. It was £500 for both, the frame was around 150 and the rest was the mattress. It is so comfy and he said he sleeps like a dream on it. Now the frame is quite basic but it suits his room and is sturdy. I'd recommend it. Alternatively see if you can pick up a frame either free or cheap on facebook marketplace etc. and spend as much as you can on the mattress. I don't think I'd buy a second hand mattress!

FleshLiabilities · 10/07/2026 19:03

I definitely need to change to a divan with a soft headboard as I sometimes suffer from REM sleep disorder and have previously injured myself on the metal frame.

I've been used to a king size for 30 odd years and I'm a total starfish so I'd be falling out of anything smaller.

I got my bed from marketplace. It is my absolute dream bed - a solid mahogany 4 poster that was hand made, and originally bought from Harrods. It cost me £200 delivered.
We bought an ikea mattress for under £500, that we’ve been very pleased with.

Sunshineandrainbow · 10/07/2026 19:08

I started looking last weekend with a 700 budget and that seemed hard

mugglewump · 10/07/2026 19:11

Go for a second hand base and spend money on a mattress.

BooseysMom · 10/07/2026 19:15

We spent that on a Silent Night king-size divan and mattress about 15 years ago. Now it really needs replacing because the springs are really noisy and the mattress is sagging in the middle. We looked at an equivalent replacement and it in the sale it was £1,100. We'll never be able to afford that now.

mondaytosunday · 10/07/2026 19:17

No. My mattress alone was close to £2000. It’s very comfortable (though my DD doesn’t like it as she says it’s too firm.

FckThisShit · 10/07/2026 19:18

Be mindful to wait for a good sale. I got an £800 mattress for £350 a few years ago.

Balloonhearts · 10/07/2026 19:22

Beds online are good for bases, I got an ottoman divan from there for £450, lovely quality 5 years on. Mattresses, really you need to test them to see if they're comfy.

Agree with others though 1000 to 1500 is more likely for a decent mid range mattress.

FleshLiabilities · 11/07/2026 13:56

Well I popped to Benson's for beds and I can see I wildly underestimated the cost. Seems like £1500 is about what I should be looking at.
