what is wrong with it?

ours was 'broken' and a phone call to Nintendo help desk 'fixed' it.

a message comes up that says to switch it off at the mains and back on again. When we do that it then says something like - the wii is buggered. DH had a look at their website and it said it's buggered.

I know the answer to this . (ours is in for repair at this very moment , ) Go to the official nintendo webbsite . Get phone number from there . Speak tp nice people and they will send you an address lable with a bar code on . Wrap up wii (we had to put adapter in as well ) send off to them for free . They will fix it and charge you £28 Which I dont think is too bad really . BOL

When did you get it? If you won it from MN, presumably it was brand new, and so may still be under guarantee. An email to MNHQ might be worth a go.
