What top to wear with this skirt.

I've bought this skirt from Next and am struggling to find a top that doesn't make me look frumpy. I never wear skirts or dresses, always trousers so I'm in unknown territory. 😬 I'm 5ft 8 and size 12. I know a short top would be best but my "early 70's tummy' is past it's best, I'm afraid. Mumsnetters, come to my rescue, please.

A dropped waist is hard to pull off. I think it needs to be a cropped top and loose not fitted. It doesn't need to be as cropped as the models but should reach just above the waist band. If the top is wide it emphasises the smallness of the waist

SilverCoins · 19/06/2025 07:26

I agree - something cropped and boxy. I have a couple of these which are super soft but also work really well to balance out something like this.

Thanks Cotswoldmama and SilverCoins. You're right. Short and boxy is the way to go. I think I can get away with it without my tum showing. There are plenty of short tops around so I'm sure I'll get lucky. Thanks for the advice. 💐

A lot of the t-shirts in the shops this summer are short and boxy but not cropped. M&S, Next or Sainsburys should have something.

A peplum top may work for you.

PoliteReader · 20/06/2025 14:26

Gorgeous skirt! I would personally want to keep the panel across the tummy on show, it really elongates the torso.

How are you with tight fitting clothes? I would put a body style top (one with a gusset and poppers) with this so that it lays smoothly under the skirt. This one for example would look great. I’d add a long slouchy sleeve cardigan in a neutral shade, and stick with tan shoes as per the model/photo (love a tan and navy combo).

Omg no!!

InfiniteTeas · 20/06/2025 22:17

Watching with interest as I have the same skirt and still haven't worn it as I also can't work out what to wear on top!

Omg no!!

What's wrong with them? Looked like a decent boxy cropped tee to me (maybe not that colour though).

I tried on a similar skirt earlier in the year. Didn't keep it coz I kept hoiking the waistband up and down, I think it confused me!😄

I just think a floppy top would not go with the skirt. It needs a fitted top.

Would a sleeves top in the same colour work? A bit like the 1st pic here?

How about this @fabspring?

Craftyrose · 22/06/2025 09:40

I bought some trousers with a similar waistband to these. I bought a couple of boxy t-shirts from new look that work with them. They are short ish but would hit the top of the waistband.

fabspring · 22/06/2025 09:53

Hi, RedRosie. I can't see your suggestion..... just "How about this?" Also for some reason I'm writing in "bold" and can't reset it. 🤣 Apologies.

Thanks all of you for your ideas. ❤️ I've got a couple of "waistband skimming" tops that look good. 🙌 Nice and cool too in this warm weather.

Try this link @fabspring . I have it in my wish list so that's probably what went wrong.

You need to click on the word "this"

fabspring · 23/06/2025 21:15

Thanks diddl. I can see now that "this" is a different colour. I was looking at it in bed with no light on and my brightness was low. 🙄 Thanks again.

That wouldn’t go with the skirt at all.

cannaethink · 24/06/2025 19:02

I love a dropped waist 😁 I’ve got this skirt (and 3 other dropped waist maxi skirts…) and I’ve worn them with fitted ribbed tops that just meet the top of the skirt, cropped boxy tops, and tucked in ‘normal’ shaped t shirts.

Mauvehoodie · 25/06/2025 10:32

I have a similar shape and wear with any tops that aren't super long/loose. If the top goes over the top of the skirt's waistband, I tuck it slightly. I'm wearing it today with an old slash neck stripe top that ends roughly at the top of the skirt waistband.
