help - my bedroom is so hot - what air conditioning unit?

we live in such a hot flat on a main road, so when summer comes I can hardly sleep. I have a 5 month old who is in with us and wakes up twice to feed - so I am so tired. We can't open the window at night as it is so noisy. Have a fan, but it is just circulating the hot air - any ideas before I resort to sleeping in the front room

Air conditioning units are frighteningly expensive to run though.

Have you thought about having a ceiling fan fitted? Much more effective than a tabletop fan.

Hi
wouldn't the ceiling fan be the same in terms of circualting the air ( says she who know nothing about these things- do you have one?)

Yes we have ceiling fans in all our bedrooms except DD1s (she is in the loft conversion and her ceiling is too low!) We find them brilliant and they really do cool the room.

I believe ceiling fans are better because they push the cooler air down onto you. I found this which explains it a bit, as well as this.

We have a heat pump air conditioner that also provides heat in the winter. It is much more cost effective than traditional air conditioner.

If you keep the curtains closed during the day it stops the room from heating up as much.

I have an Amcor, a de Longhi and a Bosch for various rooms.
All great, Bosch is the most quiet, de Longhi the most efficient.
DD runs very hot so cooling her room is a priority and I won't leave her window wide open at night like I do with ours.

Thanks sidge - that is very useful
What make is your heat pump science teacher?
We do keep the blinds down in the day, but it does not make a difference. We have a modern south facing flat with a lot of glass.
I am going to put the baby in my daughters room tonight as I am sure he is sleeping worse because it is so airless
Miggsie - thanks for your recommendations - going to discuss all with dp tonight. I dread the summer in our flat

Freeze a large plastic bowl of water, and put it in front of your fan so the air blows over it. It really helps cool the air.

Ours is an LG split unit (the noisy air conditioner is outside).
