MARMITE: Has the flavour changed?

Threadworm · 16/03/2008 11:10

I have a jar of Marmite which I bought at the same time as the limited edition Champagne Marmite. It is an ordinary jar but the flavour is definitely different from normal.

Is this accidental Champagne contamination, or an official flavour evolution?

Have they slipped in the different flavour on purpose to stimulate an 'I Like Marmite How It Used to Be' viral campaign?

Has anyone else noticed the change?

As an aside, just looked on the marmite website, and you can buy a marmite branded dualit toaster for 115 smackeroonies

ElaineCA · 18/03/2008 15:27

Yes, yes, it is different. I noticed it too. It is since the squeezy bottles were introduced, although I only ever buy the jars. It is a lighter colour, more runny and just not as... rich. They obviously had to change the formulation to allow it to be squeezable and they stick that stuff into the jars as well.

Hmm. I feel an Official Comment on the Marmite website coming on.

ILiketoMarmiteMarmite · 18/03/2008 15:44

While on the subject, did anyone try the Guinness special edition? It wasn't available in Ireland and I longed to try.

Threadworm · 18/03/2008 18:05

I missed the Guinness Marmite too . Odd that it wasn't available in Ireland.

The champagne Marmite is a bit yuck. Flavour is reminiscent of champagne chocolates -- not a good association for Marmite.

If I don't get a good response to my Official Comment (i,e. freebies and a promise to Put It Right) I am going to defect to Bovril

at Marmite Dualit toaster.
WTF?!

IorekByrnison · 18/03/2008 19:34

I too have left an Official Comment. If I don't get an adequate response I shall defect to Vegemite

barbamama · 18/03/2008 19:39

hmm interesting - we have a squeezy jar and a glass jar of the guiness one and I've just stuck a finger in each - they taste nearly identical! Maybe they've done them all guiness instead by mistake?

IorekByrnison · 18/03/2008 19:41

curiouser and curiouser. You say "nearly" - can you pinpoint the difference?

jangly · 18/03/2008 19:46

Do you think they might have cut the salt down in line with government guidelines. Aren't all food manufacturers supposed to be cutting it down slowly?

BroccoliSpears · 18/03/2008 19:51

Ahhh but marmite does change the further down the jar you get. Newly opened marmite is runny and reddish. The scregs at the bottom of the jar are much thicker and darker.

Fascinating marmite FACT: If you get a bit of marmite and pat it for long enough with your knife... it turns WHITE .

Pennies · 18/03/2008 19:59

I've only got a Feb 09 original and the Champagne one but I did think that the champagne one was def a milder version of the Real Thing.

More concerns noted here

IorekByrnison · 18/03/2008 20:03

I agree with all of that Broccoli (including the patting/turning white thing - I've just tried it ), but it doesn't explain the weird flavour.

I'm thinking they have had to add something to the squeezable formula to make it squeezy which is affecting the taste, and they're now using the same formula for jars as well.

IorekByrnison · 18/03/2008 20:05

Good link Pennies. I like "[censored]-brown"

Threadworm · 19/03/2008 18:07

No reply yet from the Marmite website. Not even an auto-fob-off. This is suspicious. They know they are rumbled and they have left the country.

Good Lord....Brocolli...turns white?????? Great party trick

kittywise · 19/03/2008 18:20

ooh interesting thread!
This had me in a panic, so I rushed to the kitchen and stuck my finger in the gigantic marmite jar.
It tasted the same, delish and is extremely thick. Expiry jul '09.
I will die if they change the recipe

meander · 19/03/2008 18:21

My 'normal' marmite comes from Costco and is therefore is anticipated to run out in around a year ....... but it tastes as usual.

The squeezy stuff got palmed off on dds as I like smearing it straight from the jar in order to get those intermittent pockets of hyper concentrated Marmitieness....the dds didn't complain, but I didn't taste it - was the squeezy one really grim?

meander · 19/03/2008 18:28

The Guiness one was splendid, though, I ate it on everything, up to and including chips.

meander · 19/03/2008 18:29

Guinness?

Guiness?

It's Guinness, isn't it?

bettythebuilder · 24/03/2008 23:36

Has there been an update? Any response from the marmite team?
