ideas needed. she's very bright, bookish, a bit old-fashioned, i don't think she watches much TV...

What about a:

Book voucher
book
some nice writing paper, notebooks, pens, pencils. etc
arts and craft kit, sewing, knitting,

just for starters

arts and crafts kit is good i think. like a candle-making kit or something?
being a bit feeble i always give book vouchers. felt like a change this time...

things like this have been a hit with my dds and their friends

Sounds just like my dd1. Get her a subscription to Aquila magazine . It's aimed at bright, interested children who aren't fixed on TV and popculture, but has lots of silly jokes, letters page and competitions too.

I posted a recommendation for it here a while ago, and all the people who tried it out said their kids loved it.
