Is the 'Rug Doctor' any good?

I was wondering if anybody has ever rented one? I need to get the carpets cleaned and have always hired someone to steam clean it in the past. Is the Rug Doctor as good as a professional?

it depends on what sort of carpets you have. plain ones are esily cleaned with rug doctor. we also have a carpet with some sort of ridges on it (like sea grass but made of wool, don't know how to explain it) and it does nothing for it. also, sometimes wool carpets need to be cleaned by a specialist as normal cleners might damage them.
and it's very noisy!

We have plain dark green (don't ask) carpets and a wool one like you described. Does it cost much? Is Homebase the best place to go to rent it?

that's where we get ours from, homebase. it is worth it for the plain one. you'll be amazed how dirty the water gets after cleaning it!
you could try the other one too but if it's light coloured it might not make much of a difference.
remember to take along an utility bill with your name and address on it and an ID (driving licence)
kids out of the house as it gets damp you need to let if for a couple of hours to dry and 'settle' after clening (the carpet that is).
and treat any spots beforhand with vanish or something similar for carpet stains.

ripley - are you actually from ripley????????

ripley · 14/09/2004 16:50

ha ha, no! It's the name of one of our cats. The other is called Dr Zauis (from Planet of the Apes) but I thought 'ripley' had a better ring to it as a chat name! You have a much prettier name.

Have just come back from Homebase, and tomorrow morning I'm going to blitz the carpets. My husband kept trying to talk me into getting somebody in to do it, but I'm fed up of paying loads of money for it! Will report back tomorrow on how it works...

It did a good job in our old house, with plain carpets.

fairydust · 14/09/2004 21:06

lol ripley - thought there may be a fellow sheep about

Well, I must have spent four hours using it today and my back is killing me, but I can honestly say it was worth it. The carpet looks heaps better and it cost a fraction of what it would have cost professionally! I couldn't believe how dirty the water was and the cushion pads on my dining chairs look like new! Wholeheartedly recommend it!
