I like my fiat punto (even though it's being replaced by a swift tomorrow, lol).

I have a Toyota Starlet, absolutely love it, and all the mechanics comment on how good a car it is whenever it goes for its MOT. It's never cost me much to service either, only ever needed the basics doing to it. (Oh except for when I crashed it on the motorway, but even then it survived being written off.)

It's nearly 10 years old though so you'd be able to buy about 3 with 8k. If I had 8k and wanted something newer I'd get a Toyota Yaris.

It's funny how everyone who's posted has suggested something completely different!!

One thing that I would say is you do need to go & try them all ... or at least a short list of your top 3 options.

I test drove a Yaris & didn't like it at all but that was just me. Also the some of the dealerships & dealers put me off - if they couldn't be bothered with me or treated me like a dumb blonde woman then I decided they didn't deserve the commission that they would get!

One bloke even tried to fob me off that the car had central locking when I had seen him reach over & lock it, & my ex-OH had seen that it didn't have it, & another said that you could pay for the whole car on finance & didn't ever have to pay any interest .... he soon stopped that one when he found out I was an accountant though

"dumb blonde woman" wasn't meant in a derogatory way - think they are bad to women in these places in general but I am blonde so not sure if that was in my favour.
