If you go to knitty.com there's a pattern in the Fall 2006 edition called Lizard Ridge. The pattern is for a large afghan but since it's knitted in blocks it could easily be scaled down for a baby-sized blanket. Take a look - the colours are amazing!

This is a bit eye-watering, but colourful. Diagonal stripes ?
Unusual colours .

Yes, very true, Pruni is the practical one... I am dreaming about doing one myself but think it would take about three years and am not sure if it work in another yarn? I'm a novice knitter so only just figuring these things out!

Like the blue and white sheep one half way down (detail here )

Knitty also have the Wild stripes baby blanket , which looks cool.

Oh me too. Sadly it would be about £100 in Kureyon. I would worry about substituting it because she says it uses the length of the stripes in the yarn to make that pattern I think (but I may well have misunderstood). I keep dreaming that I may go to the HK sale next week and find all their Kureyon reduced to 50p a ball.....
