Steam Cleaners - are they any good & why so expensive?

Does anyone out there have a steam cleaner? Are they as good as they seem in the adverts? I'm particularly interested in their ability to clean upholstery/rugs. Will they "transform" my manky old rug/sofa?
And why do they vary in price from about £50 to £400?
Anyone got any tips/advice?

Slightly off the subject but I have a Polti steam iron and it is fantastic. It needed a small repair about Christmas time and I couldn't believe how difficult doing the ironing was with an ordinary iron.
