I am thinking about getting a games console of some kind for my ds aged 7. But I don't know anything about them! Which ones are the main ones? Which are the best?(and the coolest!) and are any new replacements coming out?
thanks

i do think ps2 is bout the best. You can get pre-owned owns in game and gamestation for bout £90 and toys r us usally have some good offers as well

SparklyfestiveYellowFeathers · 11/11/2006 18:18

I'll do the best I can since I live with a gadget/computer freak.

PS2, as corrina said is probably the best. They actually have a deal on them in Argos atm. They'll be even cheaper soon because they are launching the PS3 soon.

X-BOX 360, quite expensive but the games are good and you can do internet from it on your tv.

PSP, handheld, excellent graphics, good games, also does other things like media (photos music etc) and the internet but it is very slow.

Nintendo DS, handheld, great games for kids, does the internet and is faster than the psp. Good deal on Amazon with them but also check out Game as they have good prices on packages too.

HTH

Depends on how much money you have to spend, where you think he's going to play it etc. If he's new to gaming then I'd agree with corrina - get a PS2, loads of games out to suit all tastes, easy to get hold of 2nd hand games (ebay, game and gamestation if you have any branches near you. XBox is better graphically and has an internal memory so you don't have to buy separate memory card like you do with the PS2, but I'd imagine more of his friends would have a PS2 so options for borrowing from friends etc.

XBox 360 is out now and is great, but as he's only 7 and it's his first probably not worth it. Ditto with the PS3, which isn't out until March anyway and will be the jawdropping price of £439!.

Nintendo Wii is coming out in December (DSs are getting it ) Check out this site to see people using it - it is very cool! Might be worth considering?!

PSP and DS are hand held consoles and both are really good, but I'd go with the DS as a first time one. Loads of games, easy to use (DD who has just turned three can play it much to my shame - I have a family of geeks!).

HTH!

I am going to get one off Ebay I think - so probably it is down to an x-box and a playstation.
which is the best between a Nintendo ds and a psp?

I would say dont get a ps2.It will be really uncool when the ps3 comes out (any minute now).

Ds has a ps2 and has loved it,but is asking for xbox 360 for xmas. He reckons the games are much better than the ps2 ones. Also ,major plus point,it comes with a wireless controller.

He also has the psp.He hasnt used it that much.I think they are bad for your eyes to be honest.

If I was you I would get the one he is asking for and never mind which is 'best'

Pollyanna · 11/11/2006 19:05

I don't think I'll be able to afford the xbox 360 or the psp3 anyway! (and also as serenity says he is only 7, he can get one of those when he is older).

I personally have reservations about these games - I am only thinking of getting him one as his friends all have one and I don't want his friends not to want to come because he hasn't got one. plus he is still more interested in lego and playmobil and I don't really want him to stop playing with his "proper" toys.

yes, every year they drip drip an extra piece of technology on the next model. Technology in operation at least 3 yrs ago in the Far East. pretend it is new and exciting and pop another £15 on the price from last year. They know that us lemmings in the rest will end up paying for the p o sh. (my new abbreviation for 'piece of shite').

somethingunderthebedisdrooling · 11/11/2006 19:10

'lemmings in the WEST' not rest.

Polly I came on here to start the very same sort of thread! Ds wants an Xbox or a playstation and I haven't a clue about any of them - none the wiser from this thread.

What's a nintendo ds lite - anyone know? Any good?

SparklyfestiveYellowFeathers · 11/11/2006 20:17

I've just bought the DS lite for myself and its great. I love it.
I know a few people who have said they are going to get one for their kids and get the Nintendogs for it.

Pollyanna · 11/11/2006 21:32

what is a nintendo ds lite?

I have been looking at Ebay - can anyone tell me why you need a memory card for a ps2?

serenity · 11/11/2006 21:53

The DS lite is the newer version of the original DS - it's smaller, that's about it! Oh, and it comes in different colours.

If you don't have a memory card with a PS2 you can't save your high scores/position/level. So if you play a game where you progress in any way, every time you turn it off and play another time you would have to start from the very beginning. It's pretty essential really.

Nemo1977 · 11/11/2006 21:56

pollyanna dont k now if your interested but I have a psp for sale. Was DHs so been well looked after but we dont have the box. Have all instructions etc and 3 games.

Pollyanna · 13/11/2006 19:31

yes, I might be Nemo (although I have to persuade dh ds needs one first). How much do you want for it?

(if you would rather email me it is victoria @ teambenson.wanadoo.co.uk).
