Need to get a family car suitable for city driving - any thoughts?

We are expecting our first child in September and live in SE London.
Need to get a family car with 5 doors, good safety record, economical to run, not too big and difficult to park (am about to take refresher lessons after years of not driving!!), but good for the odd motorway journey to see family...
We'll be buying a used not brand new car... Any recommendations?

Sounds like a Golf to me.

Bike just beat me to it, I was thinking a golf too.

Or anything of that ilk, i.e. Skoda Fabia, Seat Leon, Hyundai i30, depending on budget.

Fabia a bit smaller (based on a Polo rather than Golf). I have a Fabia, DH has a Golf - we always use the Golf if we have lots of stuff / long journey.

Ford focus ticks all those boxes!
