What would you do if your oven door hinge broke and it cost.....................

................. wait for it....................

£98.36 for a new pair of hinges and new door seals??? That is for parts only!!!
The man to fix it will cost around £40 and that's if it takes him less than an hour. I've already spent around £180 fixing this oven for various goings wrong over the last three or four years - it's about six years old.

Do you think it's time for a new oven?

Bad timing though as we can't afford to have a new kitchen yet which is what is the longer term plan.

Anyone recommend a decent cheapish oven? Need a free-standing one, preferably double oven and with pre-setting timer.

i would try speaking to the manufacturers.,..,. explain everything that's gone wrong and play heavily on the "i thought i was buying a good quality brand" etc etc

my mum had an oven that kept going wrong and the door came off and she spoke to them and said what if it had been hot, what if it had fallen on ds, what if the glass had smashed

they replaced the oven

tassis · 03/05/2006 14:29

we had something similar happen to us recently.

we bought a new oven.

very tedious.

busybusybee · 03/05/2006 14:29

Arrrrrrgh Aero that is really annoying
What make is the one you have got?
I need a new oven and definitely want a reliable one, which yours obviously isnt!!

I was wondering about a Belling one
Belling forum 335 £240 0r
Belling 317 £300

Which obviously isnt exactly cheap but the cheaper ones dont dont have double ovens. The belling 317 has a double oven the other one has an oven and a grill

desperateSCOUSEwife · 03/05/2006 14:30

buy another one me thinks

PinkKerPlink · 03/05/2006 14:32

i would buy another even if it was a cheapy:)

busybusybee · 03/05/2006 14:40

What counts as cheap?

Aero · 03/05/2006 14:42

That is the conclusion I'm coming to. It was a Scandinova - cheapest double fan oven with grill/oven and pre-setting timer we could find on our meagre budget at the time. Definitely won't be buying from them again. The element went after about 18 months, and then again after another year, and then the top oven/grill door broke, and now the main oven door hinge has snapped. Aaaaarrrrrggggghhhhhh! Think I'm throwing good money after bad with this one.

I guess a double oven isn't crucial, but very useful for Xmas time and special occassions.

Arse - am fed up with all this - the Tv's on it's way out too and the fridge! Not to mention the £240 I'm having to find for my tooth to have a crown!! Will not be getting the new specs I need this month - that is for sure. I hate spending savings on mundane items!

If it's an oven that you like/are happy with, then I'd have it repaired and buy a new one when you can afford your longer term plan i.e. new kitchen

Aero · 03/05/2006 14:43

Cheap - I guess up to £300 for decent oven, but knowing I couldn't get one with all the bits I want.

I'm really not happy with it LMB, but that was my first line of thinking too.But I've already had it repaired three times in under five years which is why it's giving me a headache.

HAve a look at the belling one I listed below aero - I think the one for £300 - argos prices looks pretty good

My absolute must is a double oven - not bothered about timers.

jamsam · 03/05/2006 14:47

£240 on dental treatment, ouch!

Aero · 03/05/2006 17:24

Yes PKP - ouch indeed, and that is for one crown for one tooth! My veneer broke a few weeks ago on front tooth, so no way of going without treatment this time.

Just off to investigate Argos now.
