any furniture experts out there please?

Dh and I (actually just DH) want to get a sort of cupboard thing without doors for the lobby bit before you go into the downstaris toilet, for hanging coats, a shoe rack and perhaps a little shlef above.
DH wants it to have a back and 2 sides rather than just a coat rack with a shoe rack on the floor but I have searched for it and cant find it. Even the man in John Lewis at Oxford St looked at me blankly.

Can anyone help please to get DH off my back (and flip him over to my front while you're there perhaps!)

try ikea - they do a whole range of hall furniture, some of which is freestanding

Have you tried Ikea? Seem to remember them having lots and lots of 'storage solutions for hallways', including tall cupboards that spin round and all sorts of other nifty ideas.
