cot mattress cover - should it fit tightly?

I've dug out our cot bed from dd1 to get it rwady for new baby. It has a foam mattress which needs a new cover (the old one shrunk). I can order a new cover on it's own but it will be a few cm too long. Is that dangerous? DH thinks I'm being paranoid!

ive got a spring mattress and all my covers got elastic corners and fitted tightly
