switch the kindle on. Go onto the menu you get pressing the little button with lines on next to the one with the house (home) on (sorry can't remember what it is called) this should bring up a menu which has Turn wireless On. Check this so the wireless is on and the book should automatically download.
I don't have a 3G one but I imagine it is much the same if you don't have a wireless connection.

I don't think you can gift Kindle books? But I could be wrong...

In that case the only way to do it would be to register both Kindles to the same account.

this might help

As far as I know, if you have bought it using your amazon account you can't send it to his without doing all the stuff people do to share books by email (I think it involves lots of formatting and using special email addresses - see the kindle book club thread).

Might be easier to contact amazon and say you bought it in error, get them to refund, and then send your father a gift voucher and get him to buy it himself.

I think it's really about time Amazon made it possible to give other people kindle books, but they don't seem to have got on to it yet.

He needs to deregister his kindle from his amazon account (via its menu) and register it to yours. Then if you go into your account and click on "manage my kindle" you should see his kindle there and be able to download the book to it. He then deregisters again, registers it back to his own account, and it will be there.
(This allows everybody to share kindle books btw - no need to format and email anything)

Yay Grin. And when you get your kindle you can do the same thing to share books.
