I have This one.
It doesnt have 3g or a keyboard but is easy to use and you simply just download books when you are near a wifi point. I love it!
There are also skins to put on them. for example Grin

HarrietJones · 20/01/2012 19:51

Thanks Tyson!

I could see what the massive difference in price was about.

I've got that one too - very easy to use and the battery life is great (about 3 weeks if you remember to turn the wifi off!) Thought if I had the keyboard one I'd keep mistakenly pressing it by accident.

HarrietJones · 20/01/2012 20:05

We've a borrowed one for the weekend & that had the keyboard. Is that the other one then?

Is this one just done with arrows etc?

i have the 3G wifi keyboard one.

I adore it passionately.

I can download books wherever and whenever I want.

I simply love it.

MonsterBookOfTysons · 20/01/2012 20:28

The cheaper one is done using the square button in the middle at the bottom.
Obviously the keyboard one is much better, but you have to work out if it is worth double the price for when your dd will use it.
If she is unlikely to download books on the bus/at home/on holiday then the wifi one is fine. Wink

MonsterBookOfTysons · 20/01/2012 20:29

At home should of been at school.

HarrietJones · 20/01/2012 20:34

Thanks should be ok then. She will only be buying with my cc I guess!

I have an older keyboard kindle - just wifi, not 3g.

I can't say I have a burning need for the 3g (it does annoy me that I don't have 3g, btu only because dh reckoned he needed it for his (fair enough, does loads of trvelling, has daily newspapers delivered etc), and apparently his son needed it for his (student - erm, how come he doesn't need ot be organised and plan ahead like I do?!) so personal jealousy, rather than need Grin)

having no keyboard for using the search function/note function would irritate me more, but again, possibly not enough to pay nearly twice the price.

IloveJudgeJudy · 20/01/2012 20:39

Disagree that the keyboard one is necessarily better. My friend has a keyboard one; I have a Kindle 4? Her DH now wants a Kindle. She told him to get a Kindle 4 so she can have it and give him the keyboard one. Reason is that keyboard is heavier and doesn't fit in a handbag so easily.

I got mine for Christmas. I absolutely love it. I really didn't think I would use it as much as I have done. I have gone through the free books, signed up to eReaderiQ to get the daily e-mails about free books. There are usually some teenage books on there. If I were you, though, I'd supervise the downloading of books, or only do that yourself.

Tesco online are doing the Kindle for for £79! atm.

I have a leather cover for mine. Didn't really want one, but DH insisted and I'm glad that he did. It makes the Kindle easier to hold and to chuck into a bag without the screen getting damaged.

There are loads of classic free books on Amazon, too, such as Dracula, What Katy Did..., Pride and Prejudice, lots of Dickens.

I hope your DD loves her Kindle as much as I love mine.

IloveJudgeJudy · 20/01/2012 20:42

Just to add, I buy all the books through the laptop, then download them to the Kindle. It really does only take a couple of seconds for them to be on there.

oohermrs · 20/01/2012 20:47

The new Kindle Fire is coming out soon (or may already) its got Internet etc. and I think can also make cups of tea!

MonsterBookOfTysons · 20/01/2012 20:49

stupid question but is the one I linked to up there ^ a kindle 4?

HarrietJones · 20/01/2012 20:52

I've just seen tesco £89 but I have a £10 code so may go for that. She's playing over the weekend with my friends and we will look at her finances!

MonsterBookOfTysons · 20/01/2012 20:53

I got mine from Tesco Much better than waiting for delivery.
What I will say is you set up your cc or debit card into the kindle and dd can buy it straight from that on the kindle.
So easy with one click.

Graciescotland · 20/01/2012 20:58

Might be slightly out of budget but can I recommend the samsung galaxy tab. It's the exact same size as a kindle and you can use it as an ereader but does the whole phone/ internet thing as well. Battery life is good too.

You can download google's android apps, which are generally free as well.

flapperghasted · 20/01/2012 21:05

DD got one and I bought a few audio books for her so she could listen to novels when she's on the train. She also has lots of books that I'd bought for myself on Kindle, cos I love kids books, and a load I found on Ebay for buttons. Loving Kindle for both of us :)

HarrietJones · 20/01/2012 21:10

Does it need to stay logged in? Scary thought of her accessing my cc & buying 1400 books!

OP posts:
MonsterBookOfTysons · 20/01/2012 21:11

HJ i AM UNSURE BUT WOULD RECOMMEND CHECKING THAT OUT FIRST THOUGH

hopenglory · 20/01/2012 21:15

you don't have to set it up to a card, you could buy her some amazon vouchers and load those up to it so she can only buy to the value of the vouchers - then other people can give her vouchers that can be added to it

OnlyANinja · 20/01/2012 21:17

Cheaper one is absolutely fine - like the idea of having her own amazon account and only putting a certain amount of money onto it.

silverfrog · 20/01/2012 21:17

It doesn't need to stay registered to your account,no. You could register it for the weekend, for eg, and let her buy books (supervised!) And then deregister again. As long as she doesn't know your amazon password, she can't log in herself.

You can register/deregister as often as you like.

Or do the same with WiFi on/off, as long as she doesn't know the WiFi password. But that would let her access elsewhere, if she was so minded...

IloveJudgeJudy · 21/01/2012 12:30

Agree that she should only download with you there, not out and about. I only download books at home, even though I could do it in MacDonalds... Tbh she would have no reason to download anywhere else as you can fit over 1000 books on the Kindle 4 (£89 one).

Don't leave her on your account as she could inadvertently download stuff, although you can un-download it any time up to 7? days later. I have done this. I pressed 1-click by mistake, went straight on to Manage your Kindle and reversed the action. It was really easy.

HarrietJones · 25/01/2012 19:13

She got hers yesterday & is in love!
