Electric/green cars - recommendations or past experience of requested

We are moving to a new house soon with off street parking. In order to keep my DD at her nursery for her final year we will need to drive her for 20min every day across London. (No direct bus/train route). It would need to fit a car seat in the back or be able to turn off the air bag in the front.
I like the idea of an electric car - has anyone had one, and if so, what models would you recommend.
Thanks in advance!

Just seen this. Have a look at Top Gear on Iplayer. They did a feature on electric cars. Seemed very expensive (£7,000 more than Golf)and fuel cost no better than a VW Golf Bluemotion. Also you'd need to replace the battery after 5 years which is expensive.

Sorry - Top Gear programme from tonight.

Ahhh - thanks for that - yes they do look expensive, £23K for a Nissan Leaf, and I think that the batteries come under warranty but will check out top gear.
