Likelihood of pregnancy after vasectomy

My partner and I had unprotected sex around six weeks after his vasectomy. He was adamant the doctor told him to wait two weeks before we could have sex again.
Google seems to say we were meant to wait three months.
Just want to ask if anyone had a vasectomy or if anyone’s partners have had vasectomy and how long you were told you had to wait.

There are also other factors that would prevent us getting pregnant, but I just wanted to check on the above.

AFAIK, he doesn’t get the all clear until he’s ejaculated X number of times (to clear out any residual sperm), and has had a sample checked.

I’d be getting the morning after pill if I were you.

Having sex and having sex without needing contraception are two different things.

I can’t remember how long DH was told to wait before having sex after his vasectomy. The doctor was very clear that contraception was needed until it had been 3 months, that DH had ejaculated at least 12 times I think during those 3 months, and most importantly had a sperm test showing a zero sperm count.

Make sure he does the sperm count test and gets a zero result before you have unprotected sex again.

Seems like I should have attended the appointment with him!

I had to wait for three months and then get an all clear on a semen sample before I was advised the I could cease using contraception.

Three months and sample to docs to confirm all clear here.

Jinxy1 · 06/06/2026 20:16

My husband was told to use contraception for a minimum of 3 months and only stop once sample was clear.

Gonebuttnotforgotten · 06/06/2026 21:14

My DH had to take 3 samples to the hospital to be tested before being given the all clear.

Definitely the clear samples not the time that’s important, you could get three clear samples in two months, it might be four, definitely not two weeks, that’s more likely to be advice on time before having protected sex due to possible pain post op

There no time scale it’s after he’s had a samples with no sperm present you get a letter confirming this

I think he’s misunderstood they do mention 2 weeks as that how long existing supplies are sat in the shot but that very general and there’s also the possibility the vasectomy hasn’t worked
you’ve had unprotected sex
our friends were 6 weeks the side of a vasectomy and she still got caught

He is definitely not going to be safe after 2wks. He clearly hasn’t paid attention.
