Genders and masturbation

I don't know where I'm going with this. Maybe it's symptomatic of not enough sleep. And yes, I know it leans on stereotypes almost to the point of crassness, but I'm just putting it out there to see what others think.

• Women assume women don't masturbate but will encourage others to do so.
• Women assume men do masturbate but wish they didn't.
• Men assume men masturbate and just accept that.
• Men assume women don't masturbate and wish they would.

T&C apply.
The value of assumptions can go up as well as down.

Well, I agree with 1 out of 4 of the above!

Agreed!

DanDan88 · 18/01/2026 11:57

Is it not the case that the majority of both sexes masturbate? Perhaps a better question would be a poll:

1 Are you female and masturbate?
2 If yes how often?
3 Are you male and masturbate?
4 If yes how often?

If more or less options are needed please add/remove them.

Perhaps 2 and 4 just muddy the waters?

Cosyfriendship · 18/01/2026 14:06

In her Opening list @mnmnddddd includes attitudes and assumptions toward masturbation and how they might vary according to sex.
The list from @DanDan88 only includes a measure of frequency.
When I was teenage I assumed that adult women stopped doing it when they married or became adult. I no longer hold that opinion. From my 20s and marriage I did not think about the subject.

BlueStrips · 18/01/2026 14:34

I’m a woman and assume other women masturbate. I don’t mind that men masturbate. Is this a poll?!

^^ Why do think this ?

exhaustDAD · 18/01/2026 16:56

I truly, truly dislike generalisations.. Especially when it comes to the sexes. I would cross out all 4 points and say:

  • A lot of people masturbate, a smaller percentage don't
  • Some people think of it as a good thing, some people think it's bad.

Check any discussion of it on this website other than on this topic!

I don't know if anyone but the most red pilly red piller incel or pick me would ever think this. I assume everyone masturbates and I'm glad they do.

The level of double standards always fascinates me , women actively encourage other women to masturbate and enjoy it, men are looked down on for the same thing by the same gender- it’s bonkers

mnmnddddd · 19/01/2026 07:31

@everywhichway @Smithey588 You don't say which point you agree with.

@DanDan88 As @Cosyfriendship says, the question isn't about whether the different genders masturbate or how often, but rather about attitudes and perceptions.

@MonkeyChopsUser @Catullus5 I'm not sure whether you're agreeing or disagreeing with each other.

@exhaustDAD In principle, I agree that stereotypes and generalisations are frequently undesirable, but surely they are endemic? Without them, how would politics function? (Perhaps that's not a question for the Sex board.🤔)

@DeepRubySwan I've been accused of being many things, but never a red pilly incel. 🤣🤣🤣 Whilst these individual perceptions may not be correct, reading MN, the wider media and from conversations with others, I'd say they seem to me to be quite common.

@mnmnddddd
neither !
Just pointing out the ( on this site), women are encouraged to masturbate and “get to know themselves “, whereas men are often termed “wankers”, if a man in a relationship masturbates, the double standards (from women, based on the different genders ) is absolutely staggering

BackToTheCaveMan · 19/01/2026 09:13

I have posted this previously on other similar discussions. I once read from puberty until the testosterone drop in old age. The majority of men masturbate every day. I'm 60 and I still do it every day.
My wife is also 60 and she never masturbates, never has.

Also to note (stealth boast) since we both retired last year our sex life has improved, from once or twice a week, to five or six times a week. 😁

exhaustDAD · 19/01/2026 09:16

@mnmnddddd Fair points :) The reason why I absolutely hate generalisations is that society can't make up its mind whether to get behind them or not. Everybody just pick and chooses, depending on what looks more favourable to them.

LiveToTell · 19/01/2026 11:03

I agree with the last two I think 😂

However, I’m a woman and don’t agree with the first two at all.

I’ve got no issues with my DH masturbating. Why would I? 🤔

AltitudeCheck · 19/01/2026 11:10

I don't think men masturbating is the issue, it's what they watch or when/ where they wank if it is disrespectful/ harmful to women (including their partner).

Watching some types of.porn, using chat rooms / cam girls, not cleaning up after themselves, wanking where kids might catch them, shirking domestic stuff to go and have a wank and wanking instead of or to the detriment of a sex life with their partner... those are the issues you see mentioned on MN!

FatCatPyjamas · 19/01/2026 18:00

I don't get it. Who are these men and women who think women don't masturbate? WHY do they think that?

Catullus5 · 19/01/2026 18:14

I'm pretty sure there's research that shows lots of women don't (and far fewer men that don't).

@AltitudeCheck yes, you do see those issues mentioned on MN but there is a wider sense that male sexuality is a troublesome, icky thing. For example, anything involving any sort of visuals is problematic even though that's a feature of it.
