How can I stop spotting during sex

I had a copper coil fitted last October and have experienced the usual heavy periods and spotting, which I know is normal. However, I’ve started seeing a new guy, and every time we’ve had sex, there’s been some light bleeding. He’s super fine about it, but it can get a bit messy and I am nervous about oral too as a result. I’ve seen suggestions online about menstrual discs or sponges to absorb blood, but before I go down an internet rabbit hole, I wondered if anyone has any first-hand recommendations?

Personally as a guy this wouldn't bother me and I would be ok dealing with any messiness. Does showering beforehand not prevent this being an issue?

Thanks @GarrynotsoGorilla - luckily he is super chilled but it's affecting my confidence. It's more penetrative sex sort of jiggles the coil which causes the spotting 😕

@Bear65 obviously going at it a little vigorously 😜 so Oral probably would be fine, certainly before it gets vigorous. Unless the wise folk here have suggestions I guess you will just have to try and be as chilled as he is.

I've had the copper coil for nearly 10 years and never had spotting during sex. Personally I'd go back to the Doctors and get them to check the coil is in the correct place and hasn't moved out of position. Bleeding during/after sex should always be checked.

Menstrual discs are brilliant! I use one called Lumma as I am peri-menopausal and occasionally have a bit of unpredictable spotting which can be exacerbated by sex.
It holds quite a lot of blood but doesn't make a seal around the cervix like a mooncup does so it's easier to insert and remove but can be a bit messy on removal so keep some toilet paper handy!

Can you tell us a bit more what they're like for period sex. How does it feel for the guy? Are there unpredictable leaks? Can you still orgasm?

I'm considering one... thanks!

@Gymbunny2025
As long as you insert it (ie so it's empty) just beforehand I haven't had any leaks. Like I said, I don't have heavy bleeding and I'm not sure I'd trust it if I did. I don't think my partner can feel it...it certainly hasn't put him off 🤣 And yes I can still orgasm (and squirt if that's not TMI). I used to use a contraceptive cap back in the olden days and it's very similarly sized to those, so I guess it's pretty unobtrusive.

Just reporting back in case helps anyone else. First time having period sex wearing a menstrual cup and it was great no leaks. He could feel it but wasn't uncomfortable. And my orgasm not affected. Would definitely recommend!

Brilliant! Thanks for sharing Flowers

@TerfTerf and thank you for recommending ☺️
