How does morning glory work?

Led9519 · 06/03/2023 07:50

Sorry for being naive but how does it work, do men just wake up with one? My dh does/did most times (or has one earlier in his sleep). This made sense to me as thought it was hormonal/blood pressure/sleep cycles etc.
However the other day he didn’t have one then was awake just reading some football scores on his phone I think and then I noticed he got a hard on. I asked him what he was thinking about and he just said it’s morning wood and he can’t control it… but he was already awake?
Just confused!!!

It's not related to what he's thinking about, it's literally just a physical thing that can happen with no sexual input at all. Morning wood doesn't mean he's been dreaming about sex, it doesn't have to happen before waking, can just as easily be after (even while checking the football scores). It's possible to get an erection just from yawning.

I’m in my 40’s, and I’d say sometimes I wake with one sometimes I don’t, but when I wake and I stay in that relaxed zone I seem to be super sensitive to getting them for no apparent reason.

dalmation4046 · 07/03/2023 08:10

Feel frustrated reading your post and the replies when you're clearly not asking about 'normal' morning glory 😂. I do think (woman here so could be wrong) if men wake and they stay relaxed, warm and still a bit sleepy, it can just happen. I've asked my OH what he's thinking of before, in a similar situation, and he said it was still part of morning glory that happened cos he was relaxed and warm not long after waking. X

i would guess he has just got a regular hard on 🤷🏼, spontaneous erections do happen ( but mostly in your teens TBH ).

Again, 40 male here, and yes I can still get randoms ones at random periods throughout the day, nowhere near as often as when I was in my teens/twenties but it does still happen.

Male101 · 07/03/2023 13:14

Do you know when you've been up for a few hours but still really sleepy and then you suddenly perk up a bit and properly wake up?

It can happen then too . Not great when at work lol.

So maybe he had been "awake" for a bit but only just woke up.

Estherpologist · 08/03/2023 06:06

I've heard a theory. Don't know if it's true, but it kinda makes sense.

Part of the prostate's function is to impare urinary flow during ejaculation, as sperms need to be in a more alkalae environment to work, whereas urine is more acidic. Waking up in the morning with a full badder is normal and, as the mechanisms that lead to both erections and the prostate constricting the urethra are the same, it's not unreasonable to think that morning wood might just be the body's way of reducing the risk of venting the bladder.

Possibly more significant, use of the word "lying" implies you don't trust your husband. Why is that? Why are you unwilling to accept the idea that he had a spontaneous errection unrelated to sexual thoughts? Even if he had been thinking about sex, what's wrong with that? Suppose he had been, how was your question framed - if it was accusatory, might he have felt belittled, attacked or embarrassed?

It's possible he was thinking about shagging your sister last weekend, or maybe he just got an errection.

Led9519 · 08/03/2023 06:14

Yeah it’s fine, I’ve showed him this thread. We had a laugh… he said I’ll have to accept hard ons are his area of expertise. Not mine. Have to agree with him there!

Unexpected erections? I used to get the odd one as a teenager on the school bus completely unconnected to thoughts (I think!) of sex.

Led9519 · 06/03/2023 08:34

Btw don’t want to police his thoughts of course it’s the lie that bothers me and trying to convince me it’s normal morning wood when he’s already awake!
Not sure anyone has really answered my question?

I've had it rise when I'm awake it sometimes happenes, just a pickle then it's like playing snooker doing trick shots when trying to pee in the toilet

mumof1or2 · 12/03/2023 20:24

I'm surprised nobody has said this already, but when/as you wake up you get a rush of hormones for the day (men and women). As men get a rush of testosterone as part of this, they get morning glory. The reason it can be less frequent as they get older is because they produce less and less testosterone. I would say the most likely explanation for what happened is that his rush of hormones came in just after he'd woken up instead of as he woke up.

Colourfingers2 · 12/03/2023 20:32

Just blood flowing to it for some reason, nothing to do with sex. Grown men’ll get them on a bus. No need for any paranoia. I’ve had them when I’m trying to calculate an estimate ffs. It’s more of an annoyance to us than anything else to be honest.

It's certainly a pickle at times, especially when your trying to focus on national security issues etc and bing, hello so to speak

Abhannmor · 12/03/2023 21:17

Sometimes, tragically , it's a 'peehard'. You need to urinate.

Johnisafckface · 13/03/2023 00:14

My ex who is mid 50s was still getting morning wood. And it wouldn’t take much for him to get hard during the day. Just a fleeting sexual thought would make him hard, even if he was in the midst of doing something relaxing like reading or driving.

My understanding is that it's just part of the body's natural cycle, and isn't a product of any particular stimulation mental or physical.

Davy009 · 13/03/2023 20:05

well sometimes I dont get hard until a few minutes after i wake, maybe something to do with blood pressure rising, who knows. funny think is, i had an operation and a general anaethetic, not kidding when I woke from that, i had a raging erection, harder than I've ever had in my life lol. a real throbbing hardon haha

Male101 · 14/03/2023 08:59

Woman have a equivalent to this. They can wake up... erm... ready for action so to speak.

I bet that was awkward around the doctors lol.

Davy009 · 20/03/2023 19:50

An ex of mine who was a nurse told me it was actually quite a common occurrence.

Estherpologist · 21/03/2023 08:05

It's probably apocryphal, but I've heard a "game" amongst flight attendants on long haul flights, is to turn the cabin temperature up to see which sleeping men get erections.

topcat2014 · 21/03/2023 22:23

I am never going to sleep on a plane again!

Iloveabaconbutty · 21/03/2023 23:24

I realise I'm a bit late to this one and I think it's all pretty much been said already by pps.

Straight answer to OP is - I haven't a flippin' clue! It's very pleasant though and the best indicator that I've had a really good night's sleep. Nothing to do with feeling horny at all. Just sleepy and relaxed. Often it takes a good while to subside. I sometimes point it out to DW (if she's awake) and we both have a good laugh.

Iloveabaconbutty · 22/03/2023 00:34

Just re-read your original post OP and realise I didn't comment on "delayed morning glory". Yes, it sometimes happens, if I'm in "relaxed zone" for some time after waking, but still in bed, warm and comfy for a little while. Incredibly earlier this year it happened when I was idly contemplating having to complete my tax return later that day. I thought it was a bit strange at the time. Footy results are one thing, but tax returns?! 😂
