Severe headache just before orgasm, should I be worried?

The last two times I've had sex with my partner, during the build up to orgasm I've had a severe headache.

So severe we had to stop, I felt like I had my head in a vice and felt terrible.

I've also felt unwell for hours after, and still feel poorly today. I feel sick, wobbly and still have a headache.

I've Dr Googled and can see it could be an 'orgasm headache' but is it something I should go to my GP for? My minds running away with other things it said it could be.

We've only been dating five months and were still in the honeymoon stage, so the thought of this happening every time is awful.

I've had something similar in the past and ended up having a ct scan and lumbar puncture, but I do have a close family history of brain injury. I'd mention it to your GP but orgasm headaches are definitely a thing.

Someone I know had something similar (massive headache post orgasm lasting till the next day when he went into hospital) and it ended up being a Blood vessel abnormality in the surface of the brain called AVM (arteriovenous malformation) causing mild bleeding on the brain due to the pressure of orgasm. A relatively simple operation fixed it. Do go and see a specialist as it could be a number of things - I am not a doctor.

I had these and actually thought I was going to die at one point. My dh became scared of having sex with me. I also had tests including a lumbar puncture which came back clear. I ended up paying privately for an appointment with a neurologist who said I had something quite unusual (coital migraines) that isn't diagnosed often. He gave me a prescription for propranalol which worked a treat. I take them every day and I only very rarely get affected by the migraines now. It is vital that you see your up to rule out something more significant though. Good luck 💐🌸

Sorry...I meant GP!

I knew I could rely on MN. Came on here looking for advice on exactly this as I’ve been getting them and they’re excruciating, bit scared to Google though. Mine feel as though they’re stress related too - couple of unsatisfactory encounters with guys who weren’t right for me and now ironically someone I really like so guess it matters more.

I went to my GP and I ended up in hospital for three days! I had a CT scan and lumbar puncture to rule out a particular condition which is related to headaches through orgasm.

Thankfully it wasn't that, and we've never got to the bottom of what it was. It was slightly embarrassing in the hospital though!

Thankfully it's stopped now but I'd urge you to go to your GP as they suspected a sub-arachnoid haemorrhage which is why they wanted me to stay in for the tests.
