Hi!
Can anybody tell me anything about Southwell Minster School? We are thinking of sending out dc (11 and 8) there next year, but as we are moving from Dorset, we don't know what it's like. . .Any info would be appreciated!
Thanks. . .

My nephew and niece both attend and I know their mum is very happy with it, it gets very good results and the new building is rather nice!

Thanks, primarymum, do you, by any chance, have any other information on the school from their mum?

It's a very good school and recently rebuilt as well so great facilities. 2 of my H's cousins went/go there. Both are averagely bright and have done well. Teaching can be a bit traditional but otherwise discipline, homework etc all seems to be good.

DD1 has just been accepted as we moved here over the summer hols. Apparently it is in great demand and we were very lucky to get a place. Neighbour awestruck that we managed to get her in! Have heard many good reports - I know they have a strong musical tradition (I think that's how DD1 got lucky) OP, we also lived in Dorset for five years. The landscape around here may not be quite so pretty, but I love it all the same. Feel very happy to have moved to the area. Southwell is a lovely town.

Hi this is my first visit to mumsnet, I'm looking for information on Southwell senior school, we don't live in the area yet, but are thinking of moving into the heart of Southwell, surely this would mean my son would be able to attend Minster school?

Does the school have any social problems such as bullying or drugs? I know many senior schools do have these problems, but the more we avoid these problems the better.

Any information would be appreciated, thanks.

Hi lucyboo, my DS is in Y9 and seems to be doing well; he was bullied once over a period of weeks but the school dealt with it very effectively, and I am not aware of a drug problem.

Pros - impressive new building and facilities, good exam results and a recent outstanding Ofsted inspection.

Cons (for us, not necessarily for you!) - RE compulsory to GCSE level, patchy science teaching (many parents grumble about this, know several who have complained) and pupils are not set by ability until Y10 (except for maths and MFL, which happens in Y8).

The school is oversubscribed but I have never heard of a Southwell resident being refused a place (catchment area encompasses several villages though and I believe there have been issues for some of the farthest away).

Many thanks for the information, hopefully going to have a look around at some point soon. :)
