My dd's school has done the "read 4 books outside your comfort zone" holiday task again. I had some fab suggestions last time - anyone got any ideas? She loves reading and has read all the usual things., and I think what I'm looking for are adult books that she might enjoy and which will challenge her. She's been saving The Ready Made Family by Antonia Forest and Flambards for bedtime and beach reading.

She's doing the Wars of the Roses in history next year - do people think The Daughter of Time is too old fashioned for modern children?

joan aitken

get her to enjoy team read - think there is an 'extreme team read' for older ones....

there are also some semi-autobiographical/non-fiction type books for teenagers around at he moment too

DSD also 12 is readying 'Curious Incident of the Dog at Nighttime' and 'Animal Farm' with the same aim.

I think The Daughter of Time is a wonderful novel. If she is a keen reader then I see no reason why Josephine Tey's dry wit and affection for her characters should not translate fine to the C21
If she is after interesting adult novels that are also suitable for her age group, what about the Nancy Mitford duo and maybe also some Jeeves and Wooster?

Lark Rise to Candleford?
Possibly the Paston Letters for the Wars of the Roses too?

Ohh, I had forgotten about Jeeves and Wooster - I bet she'd love those!

And The Persiuit of Love is a good idea too.

Is there a "translation" of the Pasten Letters? I think the originals might be a bit much for her. Fab idea though!
