Secondary school proof of address

Can anyone confirm what proof of address is needed when we confirm our secondary school place? Although I appreciate it might vary between councils. Is it a council tax bill?

We have a year 6 child and we’re living with relatives at the moment. Our house purchase has just fallen through, we were due to complete in the next few weeks. Where we’re currently living and what was to be our new house are in the same area but because we’re currently living with family, we don’t have a tenancy agreement with them and assumed we’d be in our new home for secondary school admissions closing date and allocation day. Hoping to find another house asap but no idea if we’ll complete before March now. Should we put our names on their council tax? Or get a tenancy agreement drafted up? Please help! Very stressful situation!

Do you still own your previous house or named on a tenancy agreement? If you do, it is unlikely they will accept an alternative living arrangement. If you have no permanent address then explain the situation as you did here. Don't go fabricating documents, they can see straight through it.

No, we don’t own any other property as we moved in with relatives to save for house purchase. Thanks for your help.

You can open a Monzo account online in 5 min they will send you a bank card in the post. The letter has your address on it.

Gp registration, solicitors letter at exchange, child benefit letter? Your LA will list the accepted documents. If you do move there may be a short window to update the address for it to be treated as an on-time school application, again information will be on LA website

If you don't own other property you should be ok. The proof required is about making sure people aren't committing fraud by pretending to live in one place while actually having a home elsewhere.
A letter from your relatives confirming that you are living with them until you are able to purchase should be sufficient. If they want something more formal your relatives can do you a lodger agreement (very simple and doesn't create the same complex of rights and responsibilities as a full shorthold tenancy agreement and can terminate at minimal notice in either direction - you can easily google for a standard template).

If your relatives will allow you to stay longer, it would be best not to move between the application deadline and allocations day.
