How many hours sleep is your year 11 getting? And what sort of screens time rules /restrictions do you have?

My eldest is year 12 now but the rules remain the same as they were for last year. Bed by 11/11:30. She gets up at 7 so about 7-8 hours sleep. Phones out of the bedroom once she goes to bed. I always got the impression from her that this was a little unusual and some of her friends were up at all hours messaging etc. She is epileptic though so her sleep is very important. She has never felt the need to question it or ask for it to be changed. She knows it’s for her own health and wellbeing.

DC is getting 7 to 8 hours but I don’t think 7 is enough. Sometimes in bed by 10 and sometimes 11. 11 doesn’t work as they are rushing in the morning. Similar rules with phones.

Phone downstairs at 10. Bed at 11. She's not that happy about it but agrees it's for the best. I'm not that great at making sure the times are the actual times. She's always tired but won't go to sleep earlier.

My dd gets about 8-9 hours. We don’t have phone rules but they are sensible. They train 4 school nights until 8 or 9, so come home, have a snack, shower and are in bed by 10pm at the latest then read for 30 mins. They might go onto their phone to respond to a message but don’t spend a lot of time on it. If they couldn’t be trusted I would remove the phone.

Stowickthevast · 10/09/2026 09:50

Mine leave their phones outside the bedroom to sleep too. Bed by 10 on weekdays.

LetItGoToRuin · 10/09/2026 10:42

DD's phone locks at 8.45pm and is charged downstairs overnight. DD is in bed/her room by 10pm. She's quite sensible and goes up earlier if she's tired.

She is up early - 6am - as she leaves the house at 6.30am (her choice as she prefers the early buses to avoid the college kids.)

She prefers a gentle wakening, so her first alarm is at 5.30am.

wigywhoo · 10/09/2026 10:47

year 13, phone locks down at 9:40, lights out by 10:15 Up at 6:30

suitcaseofdreams · 10/09/2026 11:28

My year 11 goes up to bed around 10-11pm
Keeps phone in room and falls asleep listening to music - is autistic and struggles to get to sleep but has melatonin which helps
Up at 7am so probably gets around 7-8 hours sleep most nights
Probably not enough but does sports training 3x week until 9ish so bed before 10 is unrealistic

BirdLandedonmyHead · 10/09/2026 11:31

She likes her sleep, shes stricter on herself then we have to be! Bed by 10pm, i try to stop her studying by 9pm. She has DND on from 9pm. Up at 6.30 for school.

HighRopes · 10/09/2026 11:33

My Y11 goes up to bed at 9.30 on school nights, and gets up at 6.30. So a bit over 8 hours sleep most nights.

Her phone stops working for anything other than podcasts and calendar after 9.00 and before 6.00.

TeenLifeMum · 10/09/2026 11:36

Weekday bedtime is roughly 10pm but weekends more flexible. Phones, laptops, iPads live downstairs at night and is part of their bedtime routine to bring and put everything on charge over night.

I’m curious, when people say “phone locks” - do you have this through parental controls? Surely by age 15/16 they need to be able to manage this themselves?

We use an app and the iPhone parental controls. We’ve negotiated over the years and changed things as a result.

We will remove most of the controls after GCSEs and all of them at 18. It’s all about building up to that in terms of setting healthy habits, teaching DC how to identify scammers and people who want to exploit them, letting them try out the things like games and discover how addictive they are with the backdrop of a time limit etc.

My year 11 is asleep by about 10/1030 and wakes about 7am

she has her phone in her room as she falls asleep listening to music

Maybeshesbornwithitmaybeitssertraline · 10/09/2026 12:04

Ds3 has adhd. Doesn't really bother with a phone and has to be reminded to charge it. He doesn't seem to need sleep and doesn't get much of it.

What app do you use please?

My DD goes to bed 10pm ish, we’re not super strict on that really because she is quite good at just going to bed when she’s tired. She’s usually asleep before 11pm.
She gets up at 7am.

We have screen time restrictions so she has to request more time after 10am (until 6am)- was set to 9am until last year but we gave an extra hour because she sometimes likes watching stuff on her laptop before bed.

Chilli81 · 11/09/2026 19:25

We use Google family link. Very user friendly but only works on android phones.
I know they need to learn but the temptation to scroll is so strong (us adults find it hard) so keeping reasonable limits on my year 11 ds for now

Lougle · 11/09/2026 19:33

DD3 is year 13. She chooses an early bed time and is quite often in bed by 9. Awake around 7.45/8 am, which gives her 45 mins to get ready for school. Her phone is in her room at night but I'm happy with that because she has DND set and isn't very phone orientated.

DD2 is year 15, I guess? Just started college this year. She goes to bed later and needs reminders to switch off.

I completely agree. Surely they need to manage that themselves. I couldn’t imagine “locking” my DS’s phone at 8.45pm every night. At that time he’s either coming home from a match/training or chatting to his friends or doing homework all of which is online.

He usually is in bed asleep by 10.30pm. He is a good boy, works hard, plays a huge amount of sport, doesn’t cause us any trouble so it’s up to him to figure out that he needs to turn his phone off and go to bed. Tbh I’ve haven’t restricted his phone use or bed time since he started Secondary School, same for his older brother.

I’m glad it’s not just me. Maybe it depends on the dc. Mine are honestly really good and not hooked to their phones.

I would have said my DD was really good and didn't care too much about the phone, just went to sleep etc until I noticed her phone alarm set for 3am to tell her boyfriend she loves him. I happen to know he has unfettered access to his phone 24h. So now it is out of the room by 10 (why exactly she felt she had to message him at 3am was an issue dealt with separately).
